Movie Review: Sisterakas

The best-selling movie from the 38th Metro Manila Film Festival, Sisterakas promises movie goers a lot of fun, laughter, and excitement! It won 3rd Best Picture and Best Supporting Actress (Wilma Doesnt) in the recently concluded MMFF Awards Night although the latter is still not that clear to me. I do not know how Wilma Doesnt won such an award when her acting was lackluster. Sisterakas also marks the first time that box office queens Kris, Ai Ai, and Vice joined forces in a movie and as expected, the sales are record-breaking!

The story goes like this: Bernice (Vice Ganda) & Detty (Ai-Ai Delas Alas) are half siblings who have been separated during childhood but crossed each other's paths again. Detty’s wealthy family refused to extend any help Bernice’s family due to the revelation of the patriarch's infidelity. Years later, Bernice has become a wealthy and successful businessman dubbed as "the lord of apparels". But his abrasive personality and rudeness to co-workers has led to the resignation of his 374th assistant. This loss prompts his company to look for the new assistant and incidentally, Detty, who badly needs a job, walks into the building. Realizing that he is hiring his half-sister, Bernice accepts Detty as his executive assistant without Detty knowing the truth. For Detty, the job is for her daughters. But for Bernice, it’s payback time. Meanwhile, the main rival of Bernice’s company is currently posing as very strong competition. Headed by the eccentric yet equally brilliant & talented Roselle (Kris Aquino) the competition gets tougher, and a string of events lead to the two company heads fighting over the once expendable Detty.

This movie is indeed for everyone. There are a lot of funny scenes especially those that involve Vice Ganda and Ai Ai. Kris Aquino appeared trying hard. She murdered her dry acting further by inserting puns about her estranged husband James Yap, which just makes her look bitter. But I did like their punch lines and product endorsements. There are a lot of cameo roles in the film too. While Sisterakas may not be the best of the bunch, it is still recommended for those who want a good laugh. After all, the genres of other film entries are mainly drama, fantasy, and horror. If you like Vice Ganda and his crazy antics...if you miss Ai Ai's character in Tanging Ina...and Kris Aquino's kaartehan, then this movie is perfect for you.

RATING: 3.5 out of 5 STARS
