New iPad Pro 10.5 & 12.9 Models for 2017

At this year's WWDC, Apple unveiled two new iPad Pros: the all-new iPad Pro 10.5-inch and the refreshed iPad Pro 12.9-inch. Physically, both still look like the original iPad Pro but there are a lot of changes under the hood and in terms of software. Starting with the display - both iPad Pros come with an LED-backlit Retina display which is fully laminated, anti-reflective, fingerprint-resistant, and goes as bright as 600 nits. The display also features a wide color gamut, which supports HDR content. The larger iPad Pro has a 12.9-inch screen of 2,732 x 2,048 resolution while the smaller one has a 10.5-inch screen of 2, 224 x 1,668 resolution. Both have a pixel density of 264 ppi.

Ticking inside the new iPad Pros is Apple's own 64-bit, hexa-core A10X Fusion chip, which offers up to 30% better CPU performance and 40% better GPU performance than its predecessor. It also has an embedded M10 co-processor. Unlike in the previous iPad Pros, the new iPad Pro duo will have a base storage of 64GB and could go up to 256GB or 512GB. While these new iPad Pros will ship with iOS 10 by default, iOS 11 will be immediately available upon their release. Among the new features of iOS 11 are split-screen multi-tasking with drag-and-drop functionality between apps, a new Files app, a new Dock,  a new customizable dock, augmented reality, expanded Siri functionality, AirPlay 2, and upgrades to the App Store, Apple Play, Camera, Live Photos, Apple Music, and more. Apple also promises a 10-hour battery life for the new iPad Pros.

When it comes to photography, the new iPad Pros share a lot of features with the cameras found in the iPhone 7. They come with a 12-MP primary camera with an f/1.8 aperture, optical image stabilization (OIS), 6-element lens, Quad-LED True Tone flash, auto-focus with Focus Pixels, Live Photos with stabilization, and more. For selfie lovers, there is a 7-MP front-facing camera with an f/2.2 aperture, Retina Flash, 1080p Full HD video recording capabilities, and support for Live Photos. Connectivity-wise, the new iPad Pros come with dual-band Wi-Fi with MIMO, Bluetooth 4.2, LTE-A, embedded Apple SIM, GPS, FaceTime audio, and FaceTime video. They still feature the TouchID fingerprint scanner for securing data and purchasing media. They also sport a four-speaker audio setup with dual microphones for calls, video recording, and audio recording. A 3.5 mm headset jack is still in tow. Thank God.

Apple Announces New iPads & (RED) iPhone 7

Apple surprised everyone with a new iPad model, called well, the iPad. Its design is largely similar to the now defunct iPad Air 2 but the new iPad brought with it some changes. It now sports Apple's 64-bit A9 chip with the embedded M9 co-processor. It's also thicker at 7.5 mm due to a larger 32.4Wh battery. Other than these two changes, its other specs remain the same - a 9.7-inch Retina display, an 8-MP primary camera, a 1.2-MP front camera, a Touch ID fingerprint scanner with Apple Pay support, dual stereo speakers, a 10-hour battery life, and an iOS 10 mobile operating software. The new iPad is available in Silver, Gold, and Space Gray color variants, in both Wi-Fi-only and LTE models, and in 32GB and 128GB storage capacities. To become available in April or May 2017, depending on your location, its base price starts at $329.

But it wasn't only the new iPad that was announced, Apple also dropped the price of the iPad mini 4. It is now available in only one storage capacity of 128GB and priced at $399 for the Wi-Fi model and $529 for the cellular model. The entire iPad range now consists of the iPad mini 4, the new iPad, the 9.7-inch iPad Pro, and the 12.9-inch iPad Pro.

Then we go to the (Product) RED edition of the iPhone 7 and the iPhone 7 Plus. This marks the first time Apple has applied (Product) RED to its iPhones. Every purchase of the new (RED) iPhones contributes to the global fund supporting HIV/AIDS programs. In terms of specs, nothing has changed on both iPhones. Do note that (Product) RED iPhones are only available in the 128GB and 256GB variants. They will go on sale March 24, 2017.

Last but not the least, we have the updated iPhone SE. Sadly, it was not an update in specs or design, just on storage options. The iPhone SE will now come in 32GB and 128GB variants, also available starting March 24, 2017.

iPhone 7 & iPhone 7 Plus: Apple's Best Yet

This year's most anticipated smartphone duo is now official - the Apple iPhone 7 and the iPhone 7 Plus. Both smartphones took a lot of cues from their predecessors but with a few tweaks and a new finish, the iPhone 7 duo looks better than the last two generations of the smartphone. With its body made of 7000 Series aluminum, the iPhone 7 is sturdy as it is beautiful. While we are used to the matte finish of previous iPhones, the iPhone 7 will have a new Jet Black variant, with high gloss finish thanks to a nine-step process of anodization and polishing. As for the design of the iPhone 7, the antenna lines are now discreet, the camera bump is more pronounced and more importantly, it is IP67 certified, meaning it is water and dust resistant. The iPhone 7 measures 138.3 mm x 67.1 mm x 7.1 mm and tips the scales at 138 grams while the iPhone 7 Plus measures 158.2 mm x 77.9 mm x 7.3 mm and weighs 188 grams.

The iPhone 7 duo also gets an all-new capacitive Home button, which a solid-state button that works in tandem with the new Taptic Engine for precise tactile feedback. The Touch ID fingerprint scanner is still built right into it.

In terms of performance, both smartphones are powered by Apple's home-brewed 64-bit quad-core A10 Fusion chip with an embedded M10 motion coprocessor, 2GB RAM (iPhone 7)/3GB RAM (iPhone 7 Plus) and 32GB of non-expandable internal storage for the base model. Both are also available in 128GB and 256GB models, with the Jet Black variant exclusive to these two storage options. They run iOS 10 and come with all the goodies the software offers: Siri, Apple Pay, Photos, Music, Safari, iMessage, FaceTime, Maps, topnotch security and many more. Connectivity options include LTE (supporting up to 25 bands), LTE-A, VoLTE, Wi-Fi with MIMO, Bluetooth 4.2, GPS, GLONASS and NFC. Like the iPhone 7, the iPhone 7 Plus' camera features a 6-element lens, optical image stabilization, quad-LED True Tone flash and more. As for video recording and the front-facing camera, the iPhone 7 Plus shares all features of the smaller iPhone 7.

For the first time, the new iPhones will come with stereo speakers for louder audio output and higher dynamic range. Unfortunately, Apple chose to let go of the 3.5 mm headphone jack. Instead, it will provide a free Lightning to 3.5 mm headphone jack adapter in the iPhone 7's packaging. Also included in the package are the Apple EarPods with Lightning connector. And to be sold separately, starting October 2016, Apple will also offer the AirPods, which are wireless headphones compatible to the new iPhones, Apple Watch, iPad and Mac computers. Apple Announces iPhone SE & 9.7-Inch iPad Pro

Apple has unveiled two new iOS devices: the often leaked iPhone SE and the smaller 9.7-inch iPad Pro. After jumping on the bandwagon of smartphones with massive displays with the iPhone 6/6s and iPhone 6 Plus/6s Plus, Apple thought that there is still a market for smartphones with a smaller display. Here comes the iPhone SE, which is basically a rehash of the 2013 iPhone 5s. Physically, the iPhone SE and iPhone 5s have a lot in common. Both sport a 4-inch Retina Display with a pixel density of 326 ppi. They also have the same dimensions though the former is a tad heavier than the latter. The iPhone SE also has smoother frame edges compared to the sharp and shiny chamfered edges of the iPhone 5s. The iPhone SE also comes in the three color variants that the iPhone 5s was available during its reign: gold, silver, and space gray. Naturally, the new Apple iPhone also comes with a rose gold color option.

The bigger upgrades on the iPhone SE can be seen under the hood. It packs the powerful 64-bit dual-core Apple A9 chipset with the embedded M9 motion co-processor, which also powers the higher end iPhone 6s/6s Plus. It ships with iOS 9 installed complete with Apple Pay, Touch ID, Siri, and ultra-fast LTE. Unfortunately, to keep the costs down, the iPhone SE does not come with a 3D Touch display. When it comes to camera, the iPhone SE inherited the 12-MP iSight camera of the iPhone 6s/6s Plus, complete with True Tone Flash and Live Photos. While its front camera got stuck with 1.2-MP, it now has Retina Flash, which uses the iPhone's Retina Display as a camera flash.

Maybe, you are wondering how much it would cost. Well, the Apple iPhone SE will sell for $399 for its rather small 16GB variant while the 64GB model will retail for $499. It will become available on March 31, 2016.

Then we have the 9.7-inch iPad Pro, which Apple has also made official. It is essentially a smaller version of the 12.9-inch iPad Pro, also compatible with the Apple Pencil and the Smart Keyboard. It has an anodized aluminum body with four stereo speakers and a Touch ID. Its 9.7-inch Retina Display has a 2,048 x 1,536 resolution with a pixel density of 264 ppi. It is similar to the iPad Air 2's display but with 40% less reflection and comes with the new True Tone display technology. The latter simply adjusts the color temperature of the display to match the ambient lighting.

Hardware-wise, the 9.7-inch Apple iPad Pro comes with the A9X chipset with 32GB/128GB/256GB of non-expandable internal storage. It runs iOS 9 out of the box and comes with all the features that the 12.9-inch iPad Pro has, namely: picture in picture video, fingerprint-protected notes, etc. Apple also made sure that the new iPad Pro is a capable imaging device. It has a 12-MP iSight camera with True Tone Flash, capable of shooting 4K videos, slo-mo videos, Live Photos, and 63-MP panoramas. In front, a 5-MP FaceTime HD camera with Retina Flash can be found.

The new Apple iPad Pro will come in four colors: gold, silver, space gray, and rose gold and will start shipping on March 31, 2016. The 32GB variant starts at $599 and goes all the way up to $899 for the 256GB model. Are you getting one?
