Microsoft Lumia 950, 950 XL and 550 Unveiled

The Lumia 950 is one of the three new Windows 10-powered smartphones unveiled by Microsoft, along with the phablet Lumia 950 XL and the entry-level Lumia 550. It packs a 5.2-inch AMOLED display of Quad HD resolution. That translates to a pixel density of 564 ppi. It is powered by a 64-bit hexa-core Qualcomm Snapdragon 808 chipset with 3GB RAM and 32GB of expandable internal storage. It also sports a powerful 20-MP primary camera, which uses ZEISS lens along with a triple LED flash and 5th gen optical image stabilization (OIS). It is also capable of recording videos in 4K resolution. Its front camera maxes out at 5-MP. Its connectivity suite includes Wi-Fi, Bluetooth, GPS, dual-band antenna, LTE-A, and USB Type-C. A 3,000 mAh battery will keep its lights on and supports both wireless and fast charging.

Perhaps the only missing feature on the Lumia 950 is a fingerprint scanner, which Microsoft replaces with Windows Hello (front-facing infra-red scanners that securely unlock your phone). On the software side, Microsoft has introduced Continuum, which allows the user to connect the phone to a monitor and have it work as a desktop computer, running desktop apps. This is with the help of a dedicated dock where the user must plug the phone. With all these features, the new Microsoft Lumia 950 can be purchased for $550 this November 2015, which is not too expensive either.

Then we have the Microsoft Lumia 950 XL, the Lumia 950's big brother. It comes with 5.7-inch OLED display of Quad HD resolution with ClearBlack technology. Ticking inside it a 64-bit octa-core Qualcomm Snapdragon 810 chipset with 3GB RAM and 32GB of expandable internal storage. To quell overheating issues, the Lumia 950 XL is equipped with liquid cooling technology. In the camera department, the Lumia 950 XL packs a 20-MP primary camera with ZEISS optics, triple LED flash, 4K video recording, and a 5-MP front-facing snapper.

A 3,340 mAh battery will keep the phablet going, which also supports wireless and fast charging. The Lumia 950 XL will also be released in November 2015 and will cost $649.

It still packs a 5-inch 1080p FullHD IPS LCD, a Qualcomm Snapdragon 801 chipset, 32GB of expandable internal storage with 2GB RAM, LTE connectivity, a 4-UltraPixel Duo camera, and a 5-MP front camera. Image by PhoneArena
The similarities end there as this new HTC One is powered by Windows Phone 8.1. It comes with Windows' Live Tiles and Microsoft's Cortana. Hence, it is bound to clash with the likes of Nokia Lumia Icon, Lumia 1520, and other flagship Lumia smartphones. But in the end, it's basically choosing between Android and Windows Phone when getting the HTC One (M8). The HTC One (M8) for Windows is bound to both Verizon ($99.99 on a two-year contract) and AT&T in the United States. There's no mention yet of global availability.

Entry-Level Nokia Lumia 530 Unveiled

Nokia and Microsoft just unveiled the most affordable Lumia smartphone to date: the Nokia Lumia 530. It comes in single-SIM and dual-SIM variants, and is expected to cost as low as $115 before taxes and subsidies. It basically retains the features of its predecessor, the Lumia 520, which has a 4-inch display, 512MB RAM, and 4GB storage (expandable via microSD card slot). However, it upgrades on the processor, which is now a quad-core Qualcomm Snapdragon 200. The display resolution has also been bumped up a bit for a 16:9 aspect ratio, and it will come with Windows Phone 8.1 out-of-the-box. There is also Nokia Drive+ for worldwide offline navigation.

lumia 530
Then there are the unforgivable downgrades: the display is no longer IPS and does not feature the Nokia ClearBlack technology, which the Lumia 520 had. The GPU has also been downgraded to Adreno 302 from Adreno 305 of the Lumia 520. The 5-MP camera is fixed-focus and can only capture 480p videos, instead of 720p HD of its predecessor. While the Lumia 530 uses the same 1,430mAh battery as its predecessor, it has obviously become thicker, measuring 119.7mm x 62.3mm x 11.7mm. Overall, there are more downgrades than upgrades to this Lumia smartphone. You'd be better off with the Lumia 520 or the Lumia 525. But do check out its cool advertisement and hands-on demo videos below, and decide for yourself.

An Overview: Windows Phone 8.1 Update

Starting this summer, all Nokia Lumia devices running Windows Phone 8 will receive an over-the-air Windows Phone 8.1 software update. This update brings several changes to the current Windows Phone 8 OS, such as Action Center, Word Flow, Cortana, SensorCore, among others.

The Action Center is basically Windows Phone 8.1's version of notification center. If you’ve missed a phone call, been mentioned in a Tweet, or received an SMS, you’ll now find all of these things in the Action Center. The Action Center also contains four quick settings (which are customizable) to easily switch on or off Flight Mode or Wi-Fi even when your phone is locked.

Then there's Word Flow, which is an intuitive smartphone keyboard. With it, you can now glide your finger over the screen, instead of typing, and let your Nokia Lumia accurately predict what you’re going to type. The more you use Word Flow, the more it learns from you, predicting your most frequent expressions. It supports up to 16 languages.

Meanwhile, the Start screen can now be personalized more with the inclusion of an extra column of Live Tiles and the ability to display pictures in the background. Imaging has also been improved. A renewed Camera Roll gives you faster access to your images, image-editing tools and sharing options, right from Nokia Camera. Smart Shots, Cinemagraphs, and Refocus photos now come alive directly in the Camera Roll. There are also five new filters that can be found in the Creative Studio. Moreover, Nokia Storyteller has become a lot more social, thanks to the new video slideshow feature that can be shared via Facebook or Twitter.

Siri and Google Now face new competition with Cortana. It is Nokia Lumia's personal, pro-active assistant, capable of answering questions you ask yourself everyday. Cortana detects and monitors the stuff you care about, looks out for you throughout the day, and helps filter out the noise so you can focus on what matters to you. Cortana will be rolled out in stages starting in the US and later to other regions.

Nokia has also joined the bandwagon of fitness-centric devices and applications with SensorCore. With it, your Lumia smartphone will be able to find out how many steps you take, how fast you run, and where you mostly spend your time. Then there's some stuff exclusive to the Lumia 930, Lumia 1520, and Lumia Icon. With Windows Phone 8.1, the Lumia 930, Lumia 1520 and Lumia Icon are capable of capturing better sound, thanks to Dolby Surround Sound support. All three flagship devices will also be able to project content wirelessly to Miracast-enabled screens, TVs, and projectors.

All these features will come to your Lumia smartphone running on Windows Phone 8 in an update package called Lumia Cyan summer of 2014.

The Nokia XL features a 5-inch IPS LCD display of WVGA resolution. It has 1GHz dual-core Snapdragon S4 chipset and runs on a heavily skinned version of Android Jelly Bean. First Android-Powered Nokia X Goes Official

From rumor to reality, Nokia has finally entered the Android realm as it announced its first ever Android smartphone, the Nokia X. Priced from just €89 ($122) before subsidies, the Nokia X aims to package the Finn's design heritage, Microsoft's cloud and services, and Android's apps in an affordable device for the next billion looking to upgrade to a smart device.

Ticking inside the Nokia X is a 1GHz dual-core Qualcomm Snapdragon, 512MB RAM, and 4GB of internal storage, with a microSD slot for up to 32GB. On the front is a 4-inch 800 x 480 IPS LCD touchscreen, while a 3-MP fixed-focus camera is on the back. There is no LED flash, but you do get interchangeable covers in green, black, white, yellow, cyan, or red. The Nokia X measures in at 115.5 x 63 x 10.4 mm and 128.66g, and tops out at 3G.

Despite being Android-powered, the Nokia X's interface borrows heavily from both Lumia Windows Phones and Asha Touch entry-level smartphones, the two ranges the Nokia X family sits between. Google's apps like Maps and Gmail are thrown out for their Nokia or Microsoft alternatives, so for instance there's HERE Maps for navigation, Mix Radio, Skype, Outlook, and OneDrive.
nokia x
There is no access to the Google Play Store. Instead, Nokia loads its own Nokia Store, complete with a new section for third-party Android appstores like Amazon's, Yandex's, and others. Alternatively, apps can be sideloaded, and there's a file manager installed by default. The Nokia X is intended to be a global device, though Nokia says availability will begin in growth markets like India, China, Indonesia, Pakistan, Russia, and Poland. Nokia has no plans to bring the Nokia X to the US, Japan, or Korea.

Can the Nokia Lumia 1020 Replace a DSLR?

Can the Nokia Lumia 1020 really replace a DSLR? Well, at least, that's what Nokia wants you to believe. In its latest advertisement, Nokia tries to convince the public that the 41-MP PureView camera of the Lumia 1020 is a great replacement for the DSLR. With the recent Lumia Black firmware update, the Lumia 1020's camera has been improved and now images produced have more natural colors, less noise, and more detail. While I do think that the Lumia 1020 is a great camera phone, it will fall short if used as a replacement for a DSLR. Watch the advertisement below:

Nokia Lumia 525 is Successor to the Lumia 520

The Nokia Lumia 520, without a doubt, is the best-selling Windows Phone 8 device in the market today. Finally, Nokia - or shall I say Microsoft - has launched its successor, the Lumia 525. It first popped up in a Chinese regulatory filing early in November but now it has been made official by the Finnish company.

It still sports the same 4-inch screen, 5-MP primary camera without flash, and dual-core Qualcomm MSM8227 processor. The Lumia 525 now has 1GB RAM instead of 512MB and swappable back covers. It is also now capable of running newer Lumia apps and those that require higher RAM. Other than these, its specifications are very much the same as the Lumia 520. Watch the promo video below:
