Apple in 2017: iPhone X, iPhone 8/8 Plus & Apple Watch 3

Apple is on a roll as it announced the iPhone X, the iPhone 8, the iPhone 8 Plus, and the Apple Watch Series 3. The iPhone X, pronounced as iPhone Ten, features an all-new design covered in reinforced glass attached to a stainless steel frame. Its front is almost all display, packing a 5.8-inch Super Retina HD Display, which employs OLED technology. The display has a 2,436 x 1,125 resolution with infinite contrast, deep blacks, and color accurate. The screen also features Apple's True Tone Display, 3D Touch, and has support for HDR10 and Dolby Vision. Notably missing in front is the Touch ID fingerprint scanner. Instead, Apple throws in Face ID and a new TrueDepth camera system, which use an advanced array of sensors and software to recognize the owner's face to unlock the device. Naturally, Face ID can also be used for Apple Pay authentication.

Under the hood, the iPhone X is a very powerful device. It is powered by a six-core SoC called A11 Bionic, which is composed of two high-performance and four low-power cores. The A11 Bionic chipset also has its own neural engine, in addition to the embedded M11 motion co-processor. Storage is still non-expandable and comes in two options: 64GB and 256GB. The iPhone X will run iOS 11 and will rely heavily on gestures because of the missing home button. Aside from Siri, Apple Pay, and the usual suite of iOS apps, Apple introduces a new feature called Animoji. It uses an array of face-scanning sensors that can animate cartoon characters using your facial features, including speech. Other physical features of the iPhone X include stereo speakers, IP67 dust and water resistance, Qi wireless charging, quick charging, usual suite of connectivity and wireless technology, and a Lightning port. Like the previous generation iPhones, the iPhone X also lacks the 3.5 mm headphone jack. Thankfully, an adapter is included in the box.

Then we have the camera, where the iPhone X boasts not one but two 12-MP rear cameras, which it shares its configuration with the recently announced iPhone 8 Plus. There is a wide-angle 12-MP sensor with an f/1.8 aperture and another 12-MP telephoto sensor with an f/2.4 aperture and 2x optical zoom. The dual camera system also features dual optical image stabilization (OIS), quad-LED True Tone flash with Slow Sync, Portrait Mode, and Portrait Lighting. The iPhone X is also capable of shooting 4K videos at 60 frames per second and slow motion 1080p Full HD videos at 240 frames per second. In front, a 7-MP front-facing TrueDepth camera can be found with an f/2.2 aperture, Retina flash, Animoji, Portrait Mode, and Portrait Lighting.

With all these technological advances on board, the iPhone X will not be cheap. The base 64GB model will set you back $999 while the 256GB model will cost $1,1449. It will come in Silver and Space Gray color variants. It will be available for pre-order on October 23, 2017 and will ship beginning November 3, 2017.

Overshadowed by the announcement of the iPhone X, Apple also announced two new iPhones: the iPhone 8 and the iPhone 8 Plus, hence skipping the "S" iteration of the iPhone 7 and iPhone 7 Plus. The iPhone 8 and iPhone 8 Plus look very much like the iPhone 7 models from last year, except that they come with an all-glass back. This means that the iPhone 8 duo still have a physical home button with the Touch ID sensor embedded, IP67 rating for dust and water resistance, stereo speakers, and no headphone jack. When it comes to display, the iPhone 8 packs a 4.7-inch Retina HD display while the iPhone 8 Plus has a larger 5.5-inch Retina HD display. Both feature 3D Touch technology and True Tone display.

When it comes to hardware, the iPhone 8 duo come with the same six-core A11 Bionic chipset that the iPhone X uses, with a neural engine and embedded M11 motion co-processor. The iPhone 8 duo will also come in 64GB and 256GB variants. They will run iOS 11 out of the box and come with the goodies iOS offers like Siri, Apple Pay, and tons of productivity apps. Apple said that battery capacity of both iPhones is about the same as that of its predecessors. This time around though, the iPhone 8 duo will support fast charging and Qi wireless charging. Then we have the camera, while the iPhone 8 and iPhone 8 Plus might seem to be using the camera setup from last year (12-MP rear camera and 7-MP front camera), Apple has actually used new sensors for both models. The iPhone 8 Plus will feature Portrait Mode and Portrait Lighting. Portrait Lighting comes in four modes: Natural Light, Studio Light, Contour Light, and Stage Light. As for video capture, the iPhone 8 duo can capture 4K videos at 60 frames per second and 1080p Full HD videos at 240 frames per second.

The iPhone 8 and iPhone 8 Plus will come in three color options: Gold, Silver, and Space Gray. The iPhone 8 will retail for $699 and $849 for the 64GB and 256GB variants, respectively, which is higher than last year's models. Meanwhile, the iPhone 8 Plus will cost you $799 for the 64GB model and $949 for the 256GB model. Both iPhones will be available for pre-order on September 15, 2017 and will hit the shelves on September 22, 2017.

Last but not the least, we have the Apple Watch Series 3. For its third generation, Apple stuck with the tried and tested original rectangular design. This time around though, the display of the Apple Watch doubles as an LTE antenna for cellular connectivity. This means that you can now make calls without the need of a smartphone. You can also stream music, receive messages, and whatnot without your iPhone. The Apple Watch Series 3 still comes with an OLED Retina display with Force Touch technology. Display resolution depends on the display size: a 38 mm Apple Watch packs 272 by 340 pixels while a 42 mm Apple Watch packs 312 by 390 pixels. Their brightness is up to 1,000 nits. Depending on the model, the smartwatch is protected by either Sapphire crystal (stainless steel and ceramic cases) or Ion-X glass (aluminum cases).

apple watch series 3
Ticking inside the Apple Watch Series 3 is a new dual-core W2 processor, which is 70% faster than the previous model. Storage is 16GB for the cellular model and 8GB for the non-cellular model. Then there's watchOS 4, which comes with a plethora of new features. An improved Music app is also on board, which will automatically import new playlists from your Apple Music account. The new Apple smartwatches have a heart rate sensor and are water-resistant up to 50 meters. Apple also promises a battery life of up to 18 hours. The LTE model will cost $399 while the GPS-only model costs $329. It will be released on September 22, 2017 with pre-orders starting on September 15, 2017. Like previous Apple Watch generations, there will be special editions of the Series 3 like the Apple Watch Nike+, Apple Watch Hermes, and Apple Watch Edition.

Apple Announces New iPads & (RED) iPhone 7

Apple surprised everyone with a new iPad model, called well, the iPad. Its design is largely similar to the now defunct iPad Air 2 but the new iPad brought with it some changes. It now sports Apple's 64-bit A9 chip with the embedded M9 co-processor. It's also thicker at 7.5 mm due to a larger 32.4Wh battery. Other than these two changes, its other specs remain the same - a 9.7-inch Retina display, an 8-MP primary camera, a 1.2-MP front camera, a Touch ID fingerprint scanner with Apple Pay support, dual stereo speakers, a 10-hour battery life, and an iOS 10 mobile operating software. The new iPad is available in Silver, Gold, and Space Gray color variants, in both Wi-Fi-only and LTE models, and in 32GB and 128GB storage capacities. To become available in April or May 2017, depending on your location, its base price starts at $329.

But it wasn't only the new iPad that was announced, Apple also dropped the price of the iPad mini 4. It is now available in only one storage capacity of 128GB and priced at $399 for the Wi-Fi model and $529 for the cellular model. The entire iPad range now consists of the iPad mini 4, the new iPad, the 9.7-inch iPad Pro, and the 12.9-inch iPad Pro.

Then we go to the (Product) RED edition of the iPhone 7 and the iPhone 7 Plus. This marks the first time Apple has applied (Product) RED to its iPhones. Every purchase of the new (RED) iPhones contributes to the global fund supporting HIV/AIDS programs. In terms of specs, nothing has changed on both iPhones. Do note that (Product) RED iPhones are only available in the 128GB and 256GB variants. They will go on sale March 24, 2017.

Last but not the least, we have the updated iPhone SE. Sadly, it was not an update in specs or design, just on storage options. The iPhone SE will now come in 32GB and 128GB variants, also available starting March 24, 2017.

iPhone 7 & iPhone 7 Plus: Apple's Best Yet

This year's most anticipated smartphone duo is now official - the Apple iPhone 7 and the iPhone 7 Plus. Both smartphones took a lot of cues from their predecessors but with a few tweaks and a new finish, the iPhone 7 duo looks better than the last two generations of the smartphone. With its body made of 7000 Series aluminum, the iPhone 7 is sturdy as it is beautiful. While we are used to the matte finish of previous iPhones, the iPhone 7 will have a new Jet Black variant, with high gloss finish thanks to a nine-step process of anodization and polishing. As for the design of the iPhone 7, the antenna lines are now discreet, the camera bump is more pronounced and more importantly, it is IP67 certified, meaning it is water and dust resistant. The iPhone 7 measures 138.3 mm x 67.1 mm x 7.1 mm and tips the scales at 138 grams while the iPhone 7 Plus measures 158.2 mm x 77.9 mm x 7.3 mm and weighs 188 grams.

The iPhone 7 duo also gets an all-new capacitive Home button, which a solid-state button that works in tandem with the new Taptic Engine for precise tactile feedback. In terms of performance, both smartphones are powered by Apple's home-brewed 64-bit quad-core A10 Fusion chip with an embedded M10 motion coprocessor, 2GB RAM (iPhone 7)/3GB RAM (iPhone 7 Plus) and 32GB of non-expandable internal storage for the base model. For the first time, the new iPhones will come with stereo speakers for louder audio output and higher dynamic range. Unfortunately, Apple chose to let go of the 3.5 mm headphone jack. Apple Announces iPhone SE & 9.7-Inch iPad Pro

Apple has unveiled two new iOS devices: the often leaked iPhone SE and the smaller 9.7-inch iPad Pro. After jumping on the bandwagon of smartphones with massive displays with the iPhone 6/6s and iPhone 6 Plus/6s Plus, Apple thought that there is still a market for smartphones with a smaller display. Here comes the iPhone SE, which is basically a rehash of the 2013 iPhone 5s. Physically, the iPhone SE and iPhone 5s have a lot in common. Both sport a 4-inch Retina Display with a pixel density of 326 ppi. They also have the same dimensions though the former is a tad heavier than the latter. The iPhone SE also has smoother frame edges compared to the sharp and shiny chamfered edges of the iPhone 5s. The iPhone SE also comes in the three color variants that the iPhone 5s was available during its reign: gold, silver, and space gray. Naturally, the new Apple iPhone also comes with a rose gold color option.

The bigger upgrades on the iPhone SE can be seen under the hood. It packs the powerful 64-bit dual-core Apple A9 chipset with the embedded M9 motion co-processor, which also powers the higher end iPhone 6s/6s Plus. It ships with iOS 9 installed complete with Apple Pay, Touch ID, Siri, and ultra-fast LTE. Unfortunately, to keep the costs down, the iPhone SE does not come with a 3D Touch display. When it comes to camera, the iPhone SE inherited the 12-MP iSight camera of the iPhone 6s/6s Plus, complete with True Tone Flash and Live Photos. While its front camera got stuck with 1.2-MP, it now has Retina Flash, which uses the iPhone's Retina Display as a camera flash.

Maybe, you are wondering how much it would cost. Well, the Apple iPhone SE will sell for $399 for its rather small 16GB variant while the 64GB model will retail for $499. It will become available on March 31, 2016.

Then we have the 9.7-inch iPad Pro, which Apple has also made official. It is essentially a smaller version of the 12.9-inch iPad Pro, also compatible with the Apple Pencil and the Smart Keyboard. It has an anodized aluminum body with four stereo speakers and a Touch ID. Its 9.7-inch Retina Display has a 2,048 x 1,536 resolution with a pixel density of 264 ppi. It is similar to the iPad Air 2's display but with 40% less reflection and comes with the new True Tone display technology. The latter simply adjusts the color temperature of the display to match the ambient lighting.

9.7-inch ipad pro
Hardware-wise, the 9.7-inch Apple iPad Pro comes with the A9X chipset with 32GB/128GB/256GB of non-expandable internal storage. It runs iOS 9 out of the box and comes with all the features that the 12.9-inch iPad Pro has, namely: picture in picture video, fingerprint-protected notes, etc. Apple also made sure that the new iPad Pro is a capable imaging device. It has a 12-MP iSight camera with True Tone Flash, capable of shooting 4K videos, slo-mo videos, Live Photos, and 63-MP panoramas. In front, a 5-MP FaceTime HD camera with Retina Flash can be found.

The Apple iPhone 6s & iPhone 6s Plus

In 2014, we saw Apple cave in to the public's clamor of a larger-screened iPhone. They unveiled not one but two iPhones: the 4.7-inch iPhone 6 and the 5.5-inch iPhone 6 Plus. This year, Apple has announced their successors. Meet the iPhone 6s and the iPhone 6s Plus. Major changes in them include the addition of 3D Touch (enhanced Force Touch and Taptic Engine) technology, which debuted on the Apple Watch. There's also a better 12-MP iSight camera, capable of 4K video recording and a 5-MP Facetime camera. There's the new A9 chip with the M9 motion co-processor, and iOS 9, Apple's most advanced mobile operating system. And if you are wary of accidentally bending your iPhone, fear no more as the new iPhones are made with a tougher 7,000 Series aluminum.

The iPhone 6s and iPhone 6s Plus have the same design as their predecessors. They are clad in metal, more specifically 7,000 Series aluminum alloy, which is sturdier than the ones used before. The Touch ID fingerprint scanner can still be found on the home button, which can be used for unlocking the phone and Apple Pay. The iPhone 6s comes with a 4.7-inch Retina HD Display (LED-backlit IPS LCD) of 750 x 1,334 pixel resolution while the iPhone 6s packs a 5.5-inch Retina HD Display (LED-backlit IPS LCD) of 1,080 x 1,920 pixel resolution. The display of both smartphones also features 500 cd/m2 max brightness, dual-domain pixels for wide viewing angles, fingerprint-resistant oleophobic coating, display zoom, reachability, full sRGB standard, and scratch-resistant glass. The iPhone 6s measures 138.3 mm x 67.1 mm x 7.1 mm and weighs 143 grams while the iPhone 6s Plus measures 158.2 mm x 77.9 mm x 7.3 mm and weighs 192 grams.

As mentioned, the new iPhones now come with 3D Touch technology, which allows the device to distinguish between light, medium, and hard taps, allowing for inventive new ways to interact with apps and games. The Peek feature that can preview emails in your inbox, for instance, requires a medium touch, while pressing harder with the option titled Pop will open the message itself after previewing it, if you want to dig deeper. Aside from the Email app, Safari, Notes, Maps, and Gallery all take advantage of this new feature.

Ticking inside the iPhone 6s and iPhone 6s Plus is the new 64-bit Apple A9 chip. It is said to be 70% faster than the A8 chip and its graphics is 90% faster than previous generation. There's also the new M9 motion co-processor that is now always-on to track steps and call on Siri. The new iPhones are said to have 2GB LPDDR4 RAM, which should allow more apps and browser tabs to stay open at the same time. There will be less reloading time and multi-tasking will be much easier. Internal storage though got stuck with 16GB and still non-expandable. Good news is that you can get the 64GB and 128GB variants of the new iPhones but at a higher cost. In terms of connectivity, the new iPhones are equipped with the new Category 6 LTE Qualcomm 9X35 Gobi modem that will theoretically support speeds of up to 300Mbps. Other connectivity options include Wi-Fi 802.11a/b/g/n/ac with MIMO, Bluetooth 4.2 (transferring of files is not supported), GPS, A-GPS, GLONASS, Cell ID, AirDrop, iBeacon microlocation, and NFC.

iOS 9 is the most recent iteration of Apple's most advanced mobile operating system. The interface looks similar to iOS 8 and most of the new features can be seen on the iPad. Nevertheless, the iOS 9 interface and user experience provided by most built-in apps have been improved. Siri is more intelligent than ever, able to search a wider variety of topics and delivers much faster results. With iOS 9, battery should last longer, software updates are much smaller, the UI is more responsive, and security has been improved. And with the help of the Migration app, switching from Android to iOS should be easy. Speaking of battery, interestingly, the iPhone 6s is equipped with a 1,715 mAh battery (a bit smaller than that of the iPhone 6). In terms of battery life, both the iPhone 6s and iPhone 6s Plus can last up to 14 hours on 3G (talk time), up to 10 hours on 3G, 10 hours on LTE, 11 hours on Wi-Fi (Internet use), up to 11 hours (HD video play back), up to 50 hours (audio playback) and up to 10 days (standby time).

Since 2011, the cameras of the iPhone maxed out at 8-MP but this year things will change. The iPhone 6s and iPhone 6s Plus now come with a 12-MP iSight camera with True Tone Flash and a 5-MP Facetime camera. The 12-MP iSight main camera comes with an f/2.2 aperture, 1.22 microns (pixel size), 5-element lens, IR filter, backside illumination sensor (BSI), phase detection auto-focus (Focus Pixels), and sapphire crystal lens cover. It is also capable of doing panoramas (up to 63-MP), auto-HDR, burst mode, timer mode, geo-tagging, auto image stabilization, exposure control, face detection, and optical image stabilization (for the iPhone 6s Plus only). 4K video recording is now possible at 30 fps as well as 1080p Full HD video recording at 30 fps or 60 fps and 720p HD video recording at 30 fps. There's also slo-mo video support for 1080p at 120 fps and 720p at 240 fps, time-lapse video with stabilization, cinematic video stabilization, continuous auto-focus video, playback zoom, and the capacity to take 8-MP still photos while recording 4K video. Optical image stabilization for video is only available in the iPhone 6s Plus.

The 5-MP Facetime camera has also seen improvements. Aside from its higher resolution, it also features an f/2.2 aperture, auto-HDR, backside illumination sensor, face detection, timer mode, burst mode, and Retina Flash, which makes the Retina HD Display three times brighter to put you in optimal lighting, especially helpful when taking selfies. Then there is Live Photos, a feature that allows you to capture a couple of seconds of video (like GIF) with every picture that you choose, and these new live photos are played by 3D Touch-ing the still image. This new functionality will be supported by Facebook so that you can post Live Photos straight to your home page.

Aside from the colors Gold, Silver, and Space Gray, the new iPhones will also come in Rose Gold. They will ship with Apple EarPods and will only accept nano-SIM cards. Pricing starts at $649 for the 16GB iPhone 6s and $749 for the 16GB iPhone 6s Plus. They will start shipping on September 25, 2015.
