Movie Review: Kimmy Dora: Ang Kiyemeng Prequel

Kimmy Dora: Ang Kiyemeng Prequel is the prequel and the final installment of the Kimmy Dora film series. It stars Eugene Domingo, Sam Milby, Angel Aquino, Joel Torre, and Ariela Ureta and was directed by Chris Martinez. It is one of the official entries of the 2013 Metro Manila Film Festival. It did not bring home any major award but at least lead actress Eugene Domingo won Female Star of the Night. It also ranked fourth in the box office results.

kimmy dora: ang kiyemeng prequel

The film is set before the events of Kimmy Dora: Kambal sa Kiyeme wherein the twins are seen disputing the ownership of the family corporation. Kimmy Dora: Ang Kiyemeng Prequel is of comedy, action genre, which runs for almost 2 hours. It is rated PG-13 in the Philippines. There's nothing extraordinary about the plot - the usual sibling rivalry of Kimmy and Dora but this time the special effects and action scenes were brought to the next level. In terms of Eugene's style of comedy, I think it's much better here than in the first two installments. She's way funnier here. Some of the film's highlights include Dora's twerking scene and the twins competing for Sam Milby's attention. Arguably, I find this the funniest among the 2013 MMFF entries.

Movie Review: Girl, Boy, Bakla, Tomboy

Girl, Boy, Bakla, Tomboy is a comedy film produced by Star Cinema and Viva Films that stars Vice Ganda, Maricel Soriano, and Joey Marquez and directed by Wenn V. Deramas. It is an official entry to the 2013 Metro Manila Film Festival. It is the second-highest grossing movie among the 8 entries. In the 2013 MMFF Awards Night, it took home major awards including Best Actress for Maricel Soriano and 2nd Best Picture.

girl, boy, bakla, tomboy

It is a story of quadruplet siblings played by Vice Ganda, wherein the girl and the boy grew under the custody of their rich father while the "bakla" and the "tomboy" grew with their poor mother. But destiny makes a way to make their paths cross in an unexpected way. As the four of them meet, they will be facing another challenge as one of them is in need of a liver transplant. But since they've been separated for a long time and grew apart, there will be hesitations if saving the life of the other really matters.

Girl, Boy, Bakla, Tomboy is of comedy genre, which runs for almost 2 hours. It is rated PG-13 in the Philippines. The film could have easily become the highest grossing film (of all MMFF entries) if not for its PG-13 rating as opposed to the GP rating of My Little Bossings. Vice Ganda's acting is commendable considering he's playing the part of four different people. While his comedy is a bit crude and overly executed, surprisingly I still find many of the scenes funny. I think this movie and Kimmy Dora are the funniest of the bunch. I would have wanted them to take it easy on product endorsements.

Movie Review: My Little Bossings

My Little Bossings is a comedy film that stars Vic Sotto, Kris Aquino, Ryzza Mae Dizon, and James "Bimby" Aquino-Yap. Directed by Marlon Rivera, the film is also an official entry to the 2013 Metro Manila Film Festival. The film also marks Bimby Yap-Aquino's first big screen debut. The film bagged major awards at the recently concluded MMFF Awards Night, including Best Supporting Actress for Aiza Seguerra and 3rd Best Picture. It also currently tops the box office results of the said festival.

my little bossings

The story goes like this: Torky (Vic Sotto) is a bookkeeper working for Baba (Kris Aquino), a millionaire cash management specialist. Because of some conflict in her business that puts her life in danger, Baba entrusts the safety of her son Justin (Bimby Aquino-Yap) to Torky who takes him home to meet his daughter Ice (Aiza Seguerra) and grand daughter Ching (Ryzza Mae Dizon). Given that Justin is not particularly fond of Torky, how all four of them would get along under one roof becomes the focus of the story.

My Little Bossings is of comedy genre, which runs for almost 2 hours. It is rated GP (general patronage) in the Philippines. Despite the film's box office success, in terms of comedy, Ryzza Mae was the film's saving grace. She has this unique quality that would make the audience laugh easily by just being herself. Meanwhile, I find the drama scenes between Vic and Aiza awkward and Kris and Bimby's acting skills (or the lack thereof) so off. But I must say that Bimby is good-looking. Oh, Jaclyn Jose was funny too. Watch out for her. If there is one thing I really hated about the movie, these are the blatant product endorsements that cost the film credibility.

Movie Review: The Hobbit: The Desolation of Smaug

The Hobbit: The Desolation of Smaug is the second installment of a three-part film series based on J. R. R. Tolkien's 1937 novel The Hobbit, beginning with An Unexpected Journey (2012) and set to conclude with There and Back Again (2014). The three films together act as a prequel to Jackson's The Lord of the Rings film series. It was co-written, produced, and directed by Peter Jackson. In the film, the dwarves, along with Bilbo Baggins and Gandalf the Grey, continue their quest to reclaim Erebor, their homeland, from Smaug. Bilbo Baggins is also in possession of a mysterious and magical ring.

the hobbit: the desolation of smaug

The story goes like this: After successfully crossing over the Misty Mountains, Thorin and Company must seek aid from a powerful stranger before taking on the dangers of Mirkwood Forest--without their Wizard. If they reach the human settlement of Lake-town it will be time for the hobbit Bilbo Baggins to fulfill his contract with the dwarves. The party must complete the journey to Lonely Mountain and burglar Baggins must seek out the Secret Door that will give them access to the hoard of the dragon Smaug. And, where has Gandalf got off to? And what is his secret business to the south?

The Hobbit: The Desolation of Smaug is of fantasy, adventure genre, which runs for approximately 161 minutes. It's rated PG-13 in most countries for extended sequences of intense fantasy, action, violence, and frightening images. It is a very lengthy film, with scenes that some may find boring. Since this is just the second installment, there is still no resolution at the end of the film. What you will see are mainly action scenes and a lot of special effects. The filming locations and costumes were great too. I will not go as far to say that it is one of the best fantasy/adventure films I've seen but I think it was quite entertaining and spectacular. The film is available in 3D, IMAX 3D, and Dolby Atmos.

Ubuntu Touch OS to Release Smartphones in 2014

Ubuntu Touch finally scores its first smartphone customer. Canonical founder and product strategy leader Mark Shuttleworth revealed that the Ubuntu Touch OS will be offered on high-end phones in 2014. This means that Ubuntu Touch OS has to battle it out with juggernauts like Google' Android and Apple's iOS. It will also face some tough competition with Microsoft's Windows Phone, Samsung and Intel's Tizen, and Mozilla's Firefox OS.

Shuttleworth believes that "with a flexible programming foundation beneath and an immersive services-first interface on top, (the Ubuntu Touch OS) will find a place, though." Ubuntu Touch has already partnered with companies like LinkedIn, Baidu, Facebook, Evernote, and Pinterest. The Ubuntu Touch OS is also open, which would appeal to some business partners. Furthermore, the Ubuntu Touch OS has been endorsed by telcos such as Vodafone, 3, EE, KT, SK Telecom, Verizon, Deutsche Telecom, T-Mobile, PT, etc. Lastly, software written natively for Ubuntu Touch will also work on Ubuntu-based PCs and, someday, Ubuntu-based tablets and TVs.

Movie Review: Ender's Game

Ender's Game is a 2013 film based on the novel of the same name by Orson Scott Card. Directed and written by Gavin Hood, the film stars Asa Butterfield as Andrew "Ender" Wiggin, an unusually gifted child who is sent to an advanced military academy in outer space to prepare for a future alien invasion. The cast also includes Harrison Ford, Hailee Steinfeld, Viola Davis, Abigail Breslin, and Ben Kingsley.

ender's game

The story goes like this: In the near future, a hostile alien race has attacked Earth. If not for the legendary heroics of International Fleet Commander Mazer Rackham, all would have been lost. In preparation for the next attack, the highly esteemed Colonel Hyrum Graff and the International Military are training only the best young minds to find the future Mazer. Ender Wiggin, a shy but strategically brilliant young leader, is recruited to join the elite. Arriving at Battle School, Ender quickly and easily masters increasingly difficult challenges and simulations, distinguishing himself and winning respect amongst his peers. Ender is soon ordained by Graff as the military's next great hope, resulting in his promotion to Command School. Once there, he's trained by Mazer Rackham himself to lead his fellow soldiers into an epic battle that will determine the future of Earth and save the human race.

Ender's Game is of sci-fi, action, adventure genre, which runs for approximately 114 minutes. It's rated PG-13 in most countries for some violence, sci-fi action, and thematic material. The first half of the film was very dragging as it revolved around the day-to-day life of the main protagonist (Ender Wiggin). The plot started developing when Wiggin was sent to outer space for training. But the movie only got exciting towards the end when they are already doing battles (simulations and actual). Overall, Ender's Game was full of action and awesome special effects. After watching the movie, I felt like: "Did I just see this movie?" It felt weird as I didn't really connect to it. Perhaps I was not the target audience and it was really aimed at kids and teenagers, who are most likely to enjoy shooting aliens from outer space. But then again, it could just be me. The film is available in Dolby Digital and Dolby Atmos.

Movie Review: Captain Phillips

Captain Phillips is based on the story of Captain Richard Phillips and the 2009 hijacking by Somali pirates of the US-flagged MV Maersk Alabama, which was the first American cargo ship to be hijacked in two hundred year. It is simultaneously a pulse-pounding thriller, and a complex portrait of the myriad effects of globalization.

captain phillips

The story goes like this: When a cargo freighter passes just outside Somalian waters, some men in a motorboat approaches the freighter and starts shooting at it. The Captain, Robert Phillips deduces they're pirates so he tries to keep them off the ship but fails. They come on board so Phillips instructs the crew to hide. The pirates go to the bridge and tells Phillips they want money and when Phillips offers what they have which is about $30,000, the leader has his mind set on getting millions. He plans to take the crew hostage and hold them for ransom. But since they are hiding he goes off to find them. Eventually the crew captures the leader. His companions who have Phillips, demands they be allowed to go in the lifeboat. They let them but they keep Phillips. They try to go to Somalia but the U.S. Navy arrives and tries to stop them even if it means losing Phillips.

Captain Phillips is of action, adventure, thriller, drama genre, which runs for approximately 134 minutes. It's rated PG-13 in most countries for sustained intense sequences of menace, some violence with bloody images, and substance use. The film started a little boring as Captain Phillips prepared for his journey. Things got a little exciting when the pirate motorboat had started chasing the cargo ship. Unless you are familiar with the true story of Captain Richard Phillips, you really would not know how the hijacking of the cargo ship would end. Some action scenes were intense and the suspense/thriller aspect was always there. Tom Hanks's portrayal was flawless. He was convincing and he really played the part. He truly deserves an Oscar nod for that. This film is probably in the same league with the film The Impossible, which is also based on true story about the 2004 Indian Ocean Tsunami.

Restaurant Review: Marcia Adams' Restaurant

Marcia Adams' Restaurant is a garden restaurant in Tagaytay City that offers Mediterranean cuisine. The retreat restaurant also serves seafood and vegetarian food. Located at the border of Tagaytay City and Alfonso, Cavite, it is not that easy to locate. It's approximately 150 meters from Aguinaldo Highway. We actually met the owner and he was really warm and accommodating.

The compound is pretty big as it is filled with plants, trees, and flowers. The restaurant can accommodate around 50 people. You can choose to dine inside or al fresco. There is no air-conditioning, only fans, but hey it's not that hot in Tagaytay anyway. There interiors are well-decorated. There's actually a lot going on when it comes to the decors and furniture. The restroom is clean and has soap and tissue. They have several servers who are very knowledgeable about the menu.

When it comes to food, they serve everything Mediterranean from soup to skewered food to pasta to meat to desserts. Waiting time for food orders averages at 20-30 mins. We ordered beef stew, pasta, and pork chop. The beef stew was so-so but the pasta and the pork chop were really good. As for the drinks, we ordered this sparkling lemonade, which was fine. For the desserts, we had panna cotta, banana with chocolate, and ice cream. They were okay as well. There's nothing extraordinary with the food they serve but I guess, you come there for the cozy ambiance. It's like dining with nature around you.

2013 Pop Anthems: DJ Earworm VS Daniel Kim

It's the time of the year that DJs release their mixes of the most popular songs of pop music. This 2013, we have again DJ Earworm's United State of Pop 2013: Living the Fantasy and Daniel Kim's Pop Danthology 2013. Take a look at both mashups below and tell me which one is better.

DJ Earworm's United State of Pop 2013: Living the Fantasy has 25 songs with a dark but very good intro but somehow the mashup gets lost in the middle and in the end.

Daniel Kim's Pop Danthology 2013 has more songs - 68 to be exact. This mashup sounds much more cohesive although I still think his 2012 mashup was better. I can't blame him though for the many crappy music of 2013.

For me, Pop Danthology 2013 wins it hands down. How about you?
