HP Ventures Back Into the Tablet Business with Slate 7

Hewlett-Packard, better known as HP, is venturing back into the tablet business after abandoning the TouchPad and webOS years ago. This time, the new HP tablet named Slate 7 will be powered by Android. After its announcement at the MWC 2013, the Slate 7 should be on track to bring back HP into the tablet market.

The HP Slate 7's banks on its irresistible retail price of only GBP129 or EU149, which is sure to lure away some users from Amazon's Kindle, Samsung's Galaxy Tab, and Google's Nexus line of tablets. The Slate 7 runs on Android 4.1.1 Jelly Bean and packs a 7-inch capacitive display with a resolution of 1,024 x 600 pixels. It is powered by a Cortex-A9-based dual-core 1.6 Ghz CPU. And while most of its low-priced competitors ditched the rear camera, the Slate 7 comes equipped with a 3-MP main snapper and a VGA one on the front. There is also Beats Audio to enhance sound quality, which is similar to HTC. The tablet is 10.7mm thick and weighs just 368g.

HP will launch the Slate 7 on May 1 in UK and May 2 in Germany. No word yet if the new HP tablet will reach the Americas or Asia-Pacific.
