iPhone 5C: iPhone 5 in a Polycarbonate Shell
This is the first time Apple has launched two iPhones, a flagship model and a mid-ranger. The mid-range iPhone was unveiled to the public as the iPhone 5C. Whether C stands for China, whose market is a target of Apple lately, whether C means Cheap, since the iPhone 5C is expected to be cheaper than the iPhone 5S, or whether C means Color, since the iPhone 5C comes in 5 new colors, the newly released mid-range iPhone is a breath of fresh air. This is Apple's first attempt to go back to plastic (polycarbonate to be exact) since the iPhone 3GS. Also, you cannot deny that the colors are captivating. The question is, should you get the iPhone 5C? Let's see.
The iPhone 5C comes with a polycarbonate body with a design unlike any of the previous iPhone models. It will also come in 5 vibrant colors: white, pink, yellow, blue, and green. It is bulkier than the iPhone 5S and measures 124.4 mm x 59.2 mm x 8.97 mm while weighing 132 grams. I don't consider it heavy but it is heavier than the previous iPhone model.
It packs Apple's A6
processor, which is the same as the one in the discontinued iPhone 5. The A6 chip delivers impressive performance and graphics yet it’s incredibly energy efficient. It also comes with an array
of sensors: 3-axis gyro, accelerometer, proximity sensor, and ambient light
sensor.   The iPhone 5C packs an 8-MP iSight primary camera with ƒ/2.4 aperture, backside illumination sensor, five-element lens, hybrid IR filter, and a single LED flash. Camera features such as autofocus, tap to focus, face detection, panorama, and photo geotagging are all on-board. The camera is also capable of 1080p Full HD video recording at 30 fps. There is also video stabilization. You can still take photos while recording video. A front-facing Facetime camera can also be found capable of shooting 1.2-MP photos and 720p HD video recording. There is also backside illumination sensor on the front cam. Facetime can be done via Wi-Fi and cellular network.  In terms of connectivity, the iPhone 5C is compatible with all LTE networks (GSM & CDMA) worldwide. It also has 802.11a/b/g/n Wi-Fi and Bluetooth 4.0 wireless technology. Noticeably lacking are the IR blaster and NFC support. The iPhone 5C also has Assisted GPS and GLONASS and digital compass. Virtual assistant Siri is still present, which you can use to search, send messages, make a call, set reminders, and more.  The iPhone 5C has a built-in rechargeable lithium-ion battery, which can be charged through USB or a power adapter. Talk time is rated at up to 10 hours on 3G with a standby time of up to 250 hours. Internet use is rated at up to 8 hours on 3G and up to 10 hours of LTE or Wi-Fi. The new iPhone 5S will come with Apple EarPods with remote and mic, with storage and travel case. It will only accept nano-SIM to operate and will have to rely on a Lightning connector for charging, unless you buy a separate dock. Pricing starts at $99 for the 16GB model on contract and $199 for the 32GB model. Without carrier subsidies, you can snag a 16GB model for $549.  The iPhone 5C may not be as good a looker as the iPhone 5S. It may not have the fingerprint sensor technology. It may not even have the 64-bit architecture of the A7 chip. But in the end, it is the broader market that Apple intends to target with the device. While this is considered a mid-range device, its pricing is not necessarily cheap. It is basically an iPhone 5 wrapped in plastic. Whether this strategy will work in favor of the iPhone 5C, we've yet to find out. |
