Introducing the Xiaomi Mi Note & Mi Note Pro

Xiaomi is undeniably a force to reckon with in the smartphone market this year. In fact, it has just launched two smartphones with killer specs: the Mi Note and the Mi Note Pro.

The Xiaomi Mi Note is the more affordable of the two. It packs a 5.7-inch Sharp/JDI-made touchscreen of 1080p Full HD resolution. Its display has a 95% NTSC color gamut and a 1400:1 contrast ratio with adaptive dynamic contrast. The size of the screen itself tells you that it is actually a phablet, which makes it a potential competitor to the Samsung Galaxy Note 4 and the Apple iPhone 6 Plus. The frame of the Mi Note is made of metal while both its front and back sides are protected by Corning Gorilla Glass 3. Its front has a 2.5D glass with a gentle curve around the edges and the back has 3D glass with a more pronounced curve.

The Xiaomi Mi Note runs on a rather dated Qualcomm Snapdragon 801 chipset with a 2.5GHz quad-core CPU and Adreno 330 GPU, 3GB RAM and 16/64GB of internal memory. Take note that like many high-end Xiaomi smartphones, there's no microSD slot here. The phablet also has support for dual 4G SIM cards. Imaging-wise, it comes with a 13-MP Sony IMX214 CMOS sensor at the back with f/2.0 aperture, two-tone LED flash, and optical image stabilization (OIS). In front of it is a 4-MP camera with 2 micron pixel size, identical to HTC's UltraPixel camera. Measuring 155.1 mm x 77.6 mm x 6.95 mm and weighing 161g, the Mi Note is pretty svelte but not particularly light. Inside it is a Sony/LG-made Li-Ion 3,000 mAh battery. The Mi Note runs Android 5.0 Lollipop with Xiaomi's MIUI 6 on top. The 16GB model is expected to cost about $370 while the 64GB model is priced at $450. It will be available in black and white color variants.

Meanwhile, touted by Xiaomi as the best smartphone in the world to date, the Mi Note Pro is basically a more advanced version of the Mi Note. It has the same 5.7-inch IPS touchscreen display made by Sharp/JDI but rocks a QHD resolution (2560 x 1440) resulting in a pixel density of 515 ppi. It also uses the dual-glass design employed on the Mi Note. Ticking inside the Mi Note Pro is a powerful Qualcomm Snapdragon 810 chipset, with an octa-core processor with four Cortex-A57 cores clocked at 2.0GHz and another four Cortex-A53 cores clocked at 1.5GHz, Adreno 430 graphics accelerator, and a whopping 4GB LPDDR4 RAM. It also supports Cat.9 LTE connectivity for up to 450Mbps downlink speeds and 64GB internal storage. Imaging-wise, it has the same front and back camera unit of the Mi Note. Its battery is a tad larger at 3,090 mAh. The Mi Note Pro runs Android 5.0 Lollipop skinned with Xiaomi's latest MIUI 6. The phablet is expected to cost $530. Are you impressed?
