LG G4: The Leather-Back Flagship

The LG G4 is the newest Android smartphone (phablet to be exact) flagship to arrive. While it doesn't look radically different from its predecessor, it comes with a better camera, display and battery life - at least on paper. First off, the LG G4 has a similar body to the G3 but its edges are more pronounced. Moreover, it has a larger footprint measuring 148.9 mm x 76.1 mm x 9.8 mm and heavier at 155 grams, resulting in a lower screen to body ratio, which the LG G3 was known for. In terms of design and build quality, the LG G4 is still mainly made with plastic. In fact, it features a ceramic-finish plastic back cover with a leather back cover option. Its body is slightly curved but not as much as the G Flex. It is also said to be tougher than its predecessor and competing flagship smartphones.

The LG G4 packs a 5.5-inch Quantum Dot IPS LCD of Quad HD resolution. This results in a pixel density of 538 ppi. The display is said to be more color accurate and offers better contrast and brightness than its predecessor. Its screen is also protected by Gorilla Glass 3. Meanwhile, powering the new LG phablet is a custom-made 64-bit hexa-core Qualcomm Snapdragon 808 SoC with dual-core Cortex-A57 plus quad-core Cortex-A53, an Adreno 418 GPU and 3GB RAM. There is also 32GB of built-in storage expandable via microSD card slot. LG had seemingly decided to drop Snapdragon 810 in favor of Snapdragon 808 due to the overheating issues that have plagued the former. When it comes to software, the LG G4 boots Android 5.1 Lollipop with the LG UX 4,0 on top. Proprietary features such as Knock Code, Knock On and Quick Shot are part of the package.

In the camera department, LG has equipped the G4 with a 16-MP primary camera with f/1.8 aperture, 1/2.6 sensor size, laser auto-focus, manual controls, RAW mode and optical image stabilization (OIS). These specs alone already make the G4 a beast when it comes to imaging. There's also a Color Spectrum sensor that automatically adjusts the camera's white balance and flash color so that the resulting photo features colors that are closer to the actual thing. Like the Galaxy S6 and S6 Edge, the G4 can also launch its camera app quite fast - just six-tenths of a second. It can be done by double tapping the volume down button of the phablet. There is also an 8-MP front-facing camera with f/2.0 aperture for better quality selfies and video calls. Speaking of videos, the LG G4 can record videos of up to 4K (2160p) resolution.

Its connectivity options include Cat. 6 LTE, Wi-Fi a/b/g/n/ac, Bluetooth 4.1, NFC, and the usual array of sensors. Wireless charging is also supported albeit optional. Its battery has a 3,000 mAh capacity and unlike in other flagships, it is removable. Its battery life is also said to be 20% longer than that of the G3. The LG G4 is available in Metallic Gray, Ceramic White, and Genuine Leather finishes. It is already being sold in Korea and will be available in more countries this May 2015.
