Huawei P9 & P9 Plus w/ Dual 12-MP Leica Camera

After a series of leaks, Huawei's new pair of flagship smartphones has been unveiled in London. Meet the Huawei P9 and the larger Huawei P9 Plus. The aluminum-clad Huawei P9 is the smaller of the two and packs a 5.2-inch IPS LCD of 1080p Full HD resolution. Ticking inside is an octa-core Kirin 955 chipset with either 3GB/4GB RAM and 32GB/64GB of expandable internal storage.

But it's not the display nor the processor that Huawei is banking on for the P9. It's all about the dual camera, co-developed with German optics company Leica. The Huawei P9 has two 12-MP rear facing cameras, with one capturing color while the other one only seeing varying levels of black, gray, and white. In theory, they should work in unison to deliver more detailed shots in good light and significantly reduce noise in low light. Both cameras have an f/2.2 aperture and a field of view equivalent to a 27mm lens in 35mm terms. Its auto-focus relies on a combination of laser, contrast and depth calculation. There's also dual-LED flash at the back. An 8-MP camera adorns the front.

Connectivity options for the Huawei P9 include Wi-Fi, Bluetooth, GPS, LTE, USB Type-C port, and dual-SIM support. It also has a fingerprint scanner at the back for added security. A 3,000 mAh battery will keep its lights on. The P9 runs Android 6.0 Marshmallow out of the box with Huawei's own EMUI 4.1 on top.

Then we have the Huawei P9 Plus, which has a larger 5.5-inch AMOLED display. Unlike the regular P9, the P9 Plus' screen comes with pressure sensitivity, which Huawei calls the Press Touch. Like the P9, it is powered by an octa-core Kirin 955 processor with 4GB RAM and 64GB of expandable internal storage. It shares most of the regular P9's features including the Leica-certified dual 12-MP rear camera, rear mounted fingerprint scanner, USB Type-C port, LTE support, Android 6.0 Marshmallow, and more. The Huawei P9 Plus also features Dual-IC Rapid Charge and stereo speakers. Its battery is rated at 3,400 mAh.

The Huawei P9 is priced at €599/$680 for 3GB/32GB version and €649 for the 4GB/64GB variant while the P9 Plus retails for €749/$850. The former will be available starting April 16, 2016 in Europe and Asia while the latter will hit the stores on May 20, 2016. Both devices will be available in Ceramic White, Haze Gold, Rose Gold, Titanium Silver, Mystic Silver, and Prestige Gold color options.
