iPhone 5S or iPhone 5C, What's the Difference?

We all know that Apple has decided to junk the iPhone 5, with the iPhone 5C replacing it. The iPhone 5S will also become the company's new flagship smartphone. Surprisingly, the iPhone 4S will still be around as an entry-level device. All 3 smartphones will be running on iOS 7. The iPhone 5S will come in an aluminum body (same with the iPhone 5). The iPhone 5C will come in a polycarbonate shell (plastic!) while the iPhone 4S will still be made of tempered glass. Aside from their outer appearance, what else differentiates one from another? Let's find out.

In terms of pricing, the iPhone 5C will take on the previous pricing of the iPhone 4S - will start at $99 on contract. The iPhone 4S (now only with 8GB storage) will then be free on contract. The iPhone 5S will take on the previous pricing of the discontinued iPhone 5. It will start at $199 on contract and you will have to add $100 more for every increase in the storage capacity. If you plan to get them without carrier subsidies, expect to shell out at least $500 for the iPhone 5C and around $649 to $849 for the iPhone 5S (depending on storage capacity).

Apple has also decided to discontinue the black iPhone color (for the iPhone 5S). Probably because the black iPhone 5 was prone to scratches or at least, the scratches were more visible on black. The iPhone 5S will come in silver, gold (champagne), and space gray variants. The iPhone 5C will come in 5 vibrant colors (white, pink, yellow, blue, green) while the iPhone 4S will still be available in black and white. Of course, there are many cases and skins out there that can be used to change the look and color of your iPhone. In terms of dimension, the aluminum clad iPhone 5S is the lightest and sleekest. In terms of chipset, the iPhone 5S comes with an A7 chip of 64-bit architecture, which is a first in the mobile world. It will also have an M7 motion co-processor which takes care of the motion sensors such as gyro, accelerometer, etc. The iPhone 5C and iPhone 4S will come with an A6 and A5 chip, respectively.

Both the iPhone 5S and iPhone 5C will sport a 4-inch Retina display while the iPhone 4S will have to make do with 3.5 inches. Pixel density for all 3 iPhones is at 326 ppi. The 2 newer iPhones will also be LTE-capable. Only the iPhone 5S will have the Touch ID feature, which is a fingerprint identity sensor found in the home button. This makes the iPhone 5S the first mainstream device to feature such. The fingerprint sensor can be used to unlock the phone and make purchases on the App Store.

Even then, iPhones are known for their imaging prowess and the iPhone 5S and 5C are no exception. They both come with an 8-MP camera. The iPhone 5S has larger pixels, which allows more light to be absorbed for clearer pictures. It also sports the True Tone flash, which is a dual-LED flash. In terms of imaging features, all iPhones have more or less the same capabilities except for the Burst Mode, which is available only on the iPhone 5S. All iPhones will also be able to record Full HD videos at 30fps.

FaceTime video calling is also on board across all iPhone models. The iPhone 5S and 5C will have FaceTime HD video while the iPhone 4S will only have one of VGA quality. FaceTime is, of course, available thru Wi-Fi and cellular networks.

Intelligent assistant Siri will still be on board. iOS 7 is expected to bring a lot of enhancements for Siri. When it comes to battery life, the iPhone 5S and iPhone 5C will last for up to 10 hours talk time on 3G while the iPhone 4S will last for about 8 hours. Of course, battery life ultimately depends on how one actually uses the phone.

Both the iPhone 5S and iPhone 5C will also come with the Apple EarPods and Lightning connector while the iPhone 4S will come with the original Apple earphones and 30-pin connector. The 2 newer smartphones will also only be compatible with a nano-SIM while the iPhone 4S will work with the more common micro-SIM.
