Movie Review: 300: Rise of an Empire

300: Rise of an Empire is an American fantasy war film directed by Noam Murro. It is a follow-up to the 2007 film 300, taking place before, during, and after the events of that film with a fictionalized retelling of the Battle of Salamis. It is based on the as-yet-unreleased Frank Miller graphic novel Xerxes. Zack Snyder, who directed and co-wrote the original film, acts as writer and producer on Rise of an Empire. The cast includes Lena Headey, Rodrigo Santoro, David Wenham, Andrew Tiernan, Andrew Pleavin and Peter Mensah reprising their roles from the first film, alongside Sullivan Stapleton, Eva Green, Hans Matheson, Callan Mulvey, and Jack O'Connell. It was released in 3D and IMAX 3D.

300: rise of an empire

The story goes like this: After its victory over Leonidas' 300, the Persian Army under the command of Xerxes marches towards the major Greek city-states. The Democratic city of Athens, first on the path of Xerxes' army, bases its strength on its fleet, led by admiral Themistocles. Themistocles is forced to an unwilling alliance with the traditional rival of Athens, oligarchic Sparta whose might lies with its superior infantry troops. But Xerxes still reigns supreme in numbers over sea and land.

300: Rise of an Empire is of drama, action, fantasy genre, which runs for approximately 102 minutes. It's rated R in most countries for strong sustained sequences of stylized bloody violence throughout, a sex scene, nudity and some language. It still uses the same special effects used in the previous film. It is still bloody and gory all throughout. It is an interesting take on the Battle of Salamis. I think that Artemisia, played by Eva Green, was the real star of the film because of her cunningness and beauty. All in all, it was an okay movie with superb special effects but I still prefer the first movie. The film is available in 3D, IMAX 3D, and Dolby Atmos.

RATING: 4 out of 5 STARS
