Sony Announces $1,200 NW-ZX2 Android Walkman

Sony has unveiled an Android-powered Walkman at the CES this year. The company calls it the NW-ZX2 Walkman Hi-Res Digital Music Player. From the name itself, you can tell that it's a high quality music/media player. In fact, it supports FLAC/ALAC (up to 96kHz/24-bit) and Bluetooth with SBC/LDAC hi-fidelity codec. There's also dual-band Wi-Fi for DLNA playback. If you think that 128GB is not enough as its internal storage, you can even expand it further through its microSD card slot. Plus you get up to 60 hours of non-stop music playback.

For its steep price of more than $1,000, one would expect the best of the best in all aspects of this device. But it's odd that Sony equipped this Walkman with a 4-inch screen of 480 x 854 pixel resolution. To make matters worse, the Walkman ships with Android 4.2 Jelly Bean, not Lollipop or even just KitKat. To add insult to injury, this Walkman is not bundled with any earphones or headphones. What was Sony thinking?

It is definitely absurdly priced at $1,200. I wonder who will actually buy such a device considering Android smartphones with great audio output and quality are much cheaper, not to mention the iPod lineup, which is very affordable.
