The Stylish Samsung Galaxy S6 Edge

Expected to launch with the Galaxy S6 is the more upscale Galaxy S6 Edge. But unlike the Galaxy Note Edge, the Galaxy S6 Edge's curved screen does not offer any useful functionality aside from providing an almost bezel-less appearance and a cutting-edge look to the device. Well to be fair, the curved screen can serve as a night clock. Like the Galaxy S6, its Edge variant is wrapped in an aluminum unibody case with a Gorilla Glass 4 panel on its back. It will also be available in 4 colors: White Pearl, Black Sapphire, Gold Platinum, and the exclusive Green Emerald.

The Galaxy S6 Edge measures 142.1 mm x 70.1 mm x 7.0 mm and weighs 132 g, lighter and more svelte than the Galaxy S5. With a new build material, the Galaxy S6 Edge however lost its IP67 rating or resistance to water and dust. Like the regular Galaxy S6, it packs a 5.1-inch Super AMOLED display of Quad HD (1440 x 2560) resolution. It has impressive pixel density, color accuracy, and infinite contrast ratio for superior sunlight legibility.

Ditching the Snapdragon chipset, the Galaxy S6 Edge is powered by Samsung's own 64-bit Exynos chipset. It houses an 8-core CPU clocked at 1.8 GHz, an ARM Mali T760 GPU, and 3GB LPDDR4 RAM. As there is no microSD card support, the smartphone's base internal storage is 32GB. It is also available in 64GB and 128GB variants. To make up for the lack of microSD card slot, the Galaxy S6 Edge employs UFS 2.0 technology, which should deliver performance speeds up to 2.7 times faster than today's eMMC 5.0 tech.

Software-wise, the Galaxy S6 Edge boots Android 5.0 Lollipop out of the box topped with Samsung's latest version of its TouchWiz UI, which is supposedly thinned out, offering only the very basic Samsung-branded experience from the box. The only Samsung-branded apps pre-installed in the smartphone are S Health, S Voice, Quick Connect, and Ultra Power Saving Mode. There is also the new Themes app, which allows users to customize the look of their smartphone. Another new app is the Samsung Pay service, which works similarly to Apple Pay.

In the camera department, the Galaxy S6 Edge sports a 16-MP primary camera, the same as the one on the Galaxy S6. Its aperture size has been upgraded to f/1.9, which should provide better light capturing and shallower depth of field for better focus options and effects. OIS, Selective focus, HDR, and 4K video recording are also part of the package. Its selfie snapper has been upgraded to 5-MP and sports an f/1.9 aperture size as well, which promises great performance in low-light conditions.

The Galaxy S6 Edge is equipped with a 2,600 mAh battery and employs a quick charging tech. The handset also has wireless charging tech, which is compliant with both major standards – WPC and PMA. The Galaxy S6 Edge will roll out globally on April 10, 2015. Pricing is still unknown but it could be around $750 off-contract. Whether you should get the regular Galaxy S6 or this one is debatable but there is no doubt that Samsung has once again proved that it can churn out some of the best Android devices in the market.
