Intel, Still the Top Semiconductor Company

According to Gartner, the semiconductor industry declined 2.6% in total revenues in 2012 compared to 2011. However, it is not all bad news for semiconductor manufacturers, especially for Qualcomm. Qualcomm, which designs and manufactures the popular Snapdragon chipsets, is now the fastest-growing semiconductor company in the world. It posted a record 31.8% growth in revenue, which managed to beat analysts' expectations. With a market share of 4.4%, it is now the third largest semiconductor company in the world.

On the other hand, Intel's revenue slipped a little but still manages to retain its no. 1 position, which it has been holding for 21 years. Samsung is also unmoved at second place, which has seen an increase in its revenue - thanks to the popularity of its Galaxy smartphones and tablets. Texas Instruments and Toshiba round out the top 5. Both experienced dips in total revenues as well. Among the top 10 semiconductor companies, only 3 brands posted growth in revenue. These are Qualcomm, Samsung, and Broadcom.

Will 2013 be a better year for these semiconductor companies?
