Movie Review: Man of Steel

Another year, another superhero. This time, it is Superman who returns to the big screen as the Man of Steel. Unlike other Superman movies, this one comes in 2D, 3D, and IMAX 3D. So that's a good thing right? Yes, if you are a fan of hardcore action movies. Written by Christopher Nolan and starring Henry Cavill and Amy Adams, one could expect nothing short of a spectacular blockbuster movie. In fact, the movie will surely be a box office success. I must say that watching Man of Steel is seeing Superman like never before. Find out why...

man of steel

The story goes like this: A young boy learns that he has extraordinary powers and is not of this Earth. As a young man, he journeys to discover where he came from and what he was sent here to do. But the hero in him must emerge if he is to save the world from annihilation and become the symbol of hope for all mankind.

Man of Steel is not a sequel nor a prequel to any of the previous Superman films but is another story of how Clark Kent became who he is. Like other Superman movies in the past, it is heavy in action scenes and has a lot of visual effects for your eyes to feast on. Unlike other Superman movies, the story seemed to have focused only on action scenes and computer-generated graphics. It seemed to have lost the emotional appeal of other Superman movies. There was no chemistry between Clark and Lois either. Everything seemed so dark with action scenes left and right bombarding you that you'd rather close your eyes and not watch it because of too much violence. (I even thought that it was Iron Man 3 or Star Trek Into Darkness that had the most violent scenes but both don't even come close to what Man of Steel offers in terms of violence). Or maybe, it's just me...but no! It's also the opinion of many people I know, who have seen the film.

Don't get me wrong, I like Superman. While Henry Cavill is more of a dirty-looking version of Superman, he comes across as more manly compared to Brandon Routh of Superman Returns. He also looks stronger and more suited for the role. I just wish that the story could have highlighted more his love affair with Lois, his love for his parents, and his love for humanity. Stunning visual effects are good but must be used in moderation. Rated PG-13 in most countries because of extreme violence and destruction, don't tell me I didn't warn you. Henry Cavill may be the best Superman to date, but the darkness of the plot and lack of emotional appeal that tugs your heartstrings may also be the film's Kryptonite.

RATING: 3.5 out of 5 STARS
