Movie Review: Annabelle

Annabelle is a 2014 American supernatural horror film directed by John R. Leonetti. It is both a prequel to and spin-off of The Conjuring. The film stars Annabelle Wallis, Ward Horton, and Alfre Woodard. The film was released worldwide on October 3, 2014. It was met with mixed reviews, in fact, mostly negative from film critics. Despite that, the movie is set to be a box office success.

The story goes like this: John Form has found the perfect gift for his expectant wife, Mia - a beautiful, rare vintage doll in a pure white wedding dress. But Mia's delight with Annabelle doesn't last long. On one horrific night, their home is invaded by members of a satanic cult, who violently attack the couple. Spilled blood and terror are not all they leave behind. The cultists have conjured an entity so malevolent that nothing they did will compare to the sinister conduit to the damned that is now... Annabelle.

Annabelle is of horror genre, which runs for approximately 98 minutes. It's rated R-13 in most countries for intense sequences of disturbing violence and terror. Sure, the movie is scary with lots of jolting scenes but the plot needs more refinement. It's not even on the same level as The Conjuring and Insidious. Heck, the Paranormal Activity series is much than it. While Annabelle managed to combine different elements from other successful horror films, overall it lacked originality and a decent storyline. But if you want to just scare yourself and not care about its originality or credibility, then you should see this movie.

RATING: 3.5 out of 5 STARS
