Flagship Sony Xperia Z3+ Launches Worldwide

Sony has quietly launched the next iteration of its Xperia Z flagship smartphone: the Xperia Z3+. The new smartphone shares a lot of similarities with all previous Xperia Z series smartphones and is likely the global counterpart of the Xperia Z4, which has only been made available in Japan.

The Sony Xperia Z3+ comes with the same 5.2-inch Triluminos display of the Xperia Z3 of the same 1080p Full HD resolution. Among the upgrades it has received is the 64-bit octa-core Qualcomm Snapdragon 810 SoC with Adreno 430 GPU and 3GB RAM, which is what powers the likes of LG G Flex 2 and HTC One M9.

Imaging-wise, the Xperia Z3+ packs the same 20.7-MP snapper of its predecessor and still without optical image stabilization (OIS) but its front camera has been upgraded to 5-MP.  The smartphone is still dustproof and waterproof with an IP68 rating. Interestingly, its USB port no longer has flaps to protect it from water (but still waterproof). It has the same connectivity features of its predecessor and will run Android 5.0 Lollipop with the Xperia UI on top. Its battery capacity has been reduced to 2,900 mAh but Sony still promises a 2-day battery life. This has also enabled the smartphone to be just 6.9mm thin.

The Sony Xperia Z3+ did not turn out to be the next generation flagship smartphone that Sony fans have hoped for. Nevertheless, it brings modest upgrades to the table and will surely satisfy those who want a waterproof flagship smartphone. Let's just hope that it won't have the same overheating issues plaguing the HTC One M9.
