Movie Review: Pacific Rim

So, what's the fuss about Pacific Rim? When I first saw the trailer, I just thought that it was one of those humans vs aliens movie. It somehow reminded me of Power Rangers and even Avatar. To some extent, I was right. Pacific Rim is a movie of robots vs sea monsters. The robot are actually controlled by humans while the sea monsters are actually aliens emerging from the abyss. Throughout the film, you will witness battles, darkness, catastrophes...simply put, an apocalypse. I don't know if Guillermo del Toro has a fetish for such kind of movies, but it was definitely not my kind of action and sci-fi movie.

The story goes like this: When legions of monstrous creatures, known as Kaiju, started rising from the sea, a war began that would take millions of lives and consume humanity's resources for years on end. To combat the giant Kaiju, a special type of weapon was devised: massive robots, called Jaegers, which are controlled simultaneously by two pilots whose minds are locked in a neural bridge. But even the Jaegers are proving nearly defenseless in the face of the relentless Kaiju. On the verge of defeat, the forces defending mankind have no choice but to turn to two unlikely heroes - a washed up former pilot (Charlie Hunnam) and an untested trainee (Rinko Kikuchi) - who are teamed to drive a legendary but seemingly obsolete Jaeger from the past. Together, they stand as mankind's last hope against the mounting apocalypse.

Pacific Rim is of action/fantasy/sci-fi genre, which runs for approximately 131 minutes. It's rated PG-13 in most countries for violence and intense action. While many people said they liked it, I beg to disagree. I'd rather watch superhero movies like Iron Man and Superman than this. If there's any consolation, the effects and computer graphics used were somehow amazing but then again it was dark all throughout the film, so I didn't see enough details on both the robots and monsters. With a budget of $180,000,000, I just hope that the film will be able to break even.

RATING: 3 out of 5 STARS
