Microsoft's Surface 2 And Surface Pro 2 Have Arrived

Microsoft recently announced the successors to its Surface tablets: the Surface 2 and Surface Pro 2. Both slates are thinner, faster and lighter, USB 3.0-enabled, and powered by the latest version of Windows 8 RT and Windows 8 Pro.

The Surface 2 packs an NVIDIA Tegra 4 chipset with a quad-core 1.7GHz Cortex-A15 processor, GeForce 72-core GPU and 2GB RAM. It sports a 10.6″ ClearType 1080p Full HD display with 5-point multi-touch support. According to Microsoft, the Surface 2 is up to 4x faster than the original Surface slate, offers 25% more battery life, and features a 5x better camera and 2x faster bus and Wi-Fi speeds. The rest of the Surface 2 specs include Wi-Fi a/b/g/n support, Bluetooth 4.0, an USB 3.0 port, microSD card support, HDMI port and a 3.5mm audio jack. There are also a 3.5-MP front-facing camera (1/3″ sensor size) plus a 5-MP rear camera, both capable of 1080p Full HD video recording (stereo audio).

The Surface 2 is made entirely of magnesium and could endure a few drops on the ground. It will be available in 32GB and 64GB variants. Price starts at $449 for the 32GB model and $549 for the 64GB model. They will hit shelves in 21 markets worldwide on October 22.

The Surface Pro 2, on the other hand, is Windows 8 Pro-compatible and can be operated with a stylus. According to Microsoft, the new tablet has 50% more color accuracy, better graphics performance, improved speaker setup, and is 20% faster than its predecessor.

The Surface Pro 2 still packs a 10.6-inch 1080p Full HD diplay. It is powered by a 1.6 GHz Intel Core i5 Haswell processor. It can also be paired with Microsoft's new Power Cover to give the tablet 2.5x its standalone battery life or the Type Cover 2, which is now 1 mm thinner and back-lit. The tablet's kickstand has also been refreshed, addressing the issues many users had with the old Pro's awkward angle. As for connectivity options, the Surface Pro 2 has 3 USB 2.0, 1 USB 3.0, mini DisplayPort, Ethernet, audio in/out and a charging dock. When docked, the Surface Pro 2 can output up to a 3,840 x 2,160 resolution on an external display and is capable of editing 6K video.

Pre-orders have commenced and Microsoft will start shipping the Surface Pro 2 to 21 markets starting October 22. Price starts at $899 for the base model and will go up depending on the configuration that you want.
