ASUS PadFone S Debuts at an Affordable Price

ASUS unveiled its next iteration of the PadFone series, which is the PadFone S. It still offers both a phone or a tablet in a seamless solution. The most intriguing thing about the PadFone S is the fact that it is priced just a third of the original PadFone. It will be first launched in Malaysia and would cost just RM899 or $275.

The PadFone S packs a 5-inch 1080p Full HD display and runs on a 2.3GHz quad-core Snapdragon 801 chipset, together with 2GB RAM and 16GB internal storage, which can be expanded further via microSD card slot. It has a 13-MP f/2.0 rear camera with PixelMaster technology and a front-facing 2-MP camera. In terms of connectivity, Wi-Fi 802.11ac, Bluetooth 4.0, NFC and Cat4 LTE are all supported. It runs on the latest Android 4.4 KitKat with ZenUI on top and is powered by a 2,300mAh non-removable battery. With flagship grade specs, the PadFone S is perhaps the most affordable Snapdragon 801-powered device in the market.

Sold separately is the PadFone Station, which will set you back RM499 or $150. It packs a 9-inch WUXGA display with a 1-MP front camera, and a 4,990mAh battery. The PadFone Station doubles as a charger and dock for the PadFone S. With a combined price of RM1,398 ot $425, the PadFone S is cheaper than most 3G-enabled tablets, including the best-selling iPad mini with cellular data. Obviously the PadFone Station would not work standalone since the processor and storage is in the PadFone S itself. The PadFone S will be available in black and white color variants.
