Lenovo Introduces Moto Z, Moto Z Force & Moto Mods

The new Moto Z series smartphones have arrived - the Moto Z and the Moto Z Force. Both are now being manufactured under the Lenovo brand. The two smartphones are similar in several aspects, with the Moto Z being more affordable and svelte and the Moto Z Force being more feature-packed. Both smartphones, or shall we say phablets, pack a 5.5-inch AMOLED display of Quad HD resolution. Under the hood is the quad-core Qualcomm Snapdragon 820 chipset with 4GB RAM and 32GB/64GB of expandable internal UFS storage. Both also run an almost vanilla version of Android 6.0 Marshmallow out of the box. Connectivity-wise, the Moto Z and Moto Z Force come with a USB Type-C port for charging and audio output. Lenovo bundles both smartphones with a UBS Type-C to 3.5mm adapter inside the box. Both smartphones also feature a fingerprint scanner embedded in home button and a water repellent coating. But that's where there similarities end.

The Moto Z is crazily thin at just 5.19 mm. It is also much lighter at 136 grams because its battery is much smaller at 2,600 mAh (which supports quick charging). In the camera department, the Moto Z sports a 13-MP primary camera with a wide f/1.8 aperture, 1.12 micron pixels, laser auto-focus, 4K video support, optical image stabilization (OIS), manual controls, and a dual-tone, dual-LED flash. In front, a 5-MP camera can be found, together with a front-facing LED flash.

Meanwhile, the Moto Z Force weighs in at 163 grams with a 6.99 mm waistline. It's not as thin as the Moto Z but it has a shatterproof ShatterShield screen. It also has a much larger quick-charging battery at 3,500 mAh. For its camera, the Moto Z Force has a 21-MP shooter with an f/1.8 aperture, phase detection auto-focus, laser auto-focus, OIS, manual controls, 4K video support, and dual-tone, dual-LED flash. It also has a 5-MP front-facing snapper with its own LED flash.

But the selling point of the two new Lenovo Moto Z phablets is the Moto Mods. Currently, there are four Moto Mods available for the Moto Z line. These include the JBL Sound Boost, which is a speaker enhancer with additional battery capacity, the InstaShare projector, which allows the user to project a 70-inch screen on any nearby flat surface, again with additional battery capacity, the Power Pack module, which expands the phone's battery life by 22 hours more, and the StyleShells, which are snap-on covers for the back of the phone and will come in many finishes like natural wood, leather, or fabric.

The Moto Z and Moto Z Force will come in a variety of colors and will arrive in September 2016. In the US, the Moto Z Droid and Moto Z Force Droid editions will be exclusive to Verizon.
