Samsung Galaxy S8 & S8+: Beautiful Beasts

Sequel to the very successful Galaxy S7 range, Samsung unveils the all-new Galaxy S8 duo - meet the Galaxy S8 and the Galaxy S8+. Clad in Gorilla Glass 5 and aluminum, the Galaxy S8 happens to have the highest screen-to-body ratio of any Samsung smartphone - between 83% and 84% - due to its edge-to-edge Infinity Display with an unusual aspect ratio of 18.5:9. As a result of Samsung's quest to minimize the bezels, the Galaxy S8 duo do away with the physical home button and the two front capacitive keys. The fingerprint scanner has also been re-positioned to the back of the devices beside the main camera and the heart rate monitor. The front fascia of the Galaxy S8 contains an iris scanner, a proximity sensor, and a notification LED. The smaller Galaxy S8 measures 148.9 mm x 68.1 mm x 8 mm and weighs 155 grams while the larger Galaxy S8+ measures 159.5 mm x 73.4 mm x 8.1 mm and weighs 173 grams.

The Samsung Galaxy S8 packs a 5.8-inch curved Super AMOLED display while the larger Galaxy S8+ comes with a 6.2-inch curved Super AMOLED display. Both have a Wide Quad HD+ (1,440 x 2,960 pixels) resolution, resulting in a pixel density of 579 ppi for the Galaxy S8 and 529 ppi for the Galaxy S8+. Both also feature Samsung's Always-On Display and are HDR 10 compliant.

In the US, both handsets are powered by an octa-core Qualcomm Snapdragon 835 chipset, manufactured on Samsung's 10nm process, with Adreno 540 CPU, 4GB RAM, and a very generous 64GB expandable storage while the international model will be powered by Samsung's own octa-core Exynos 8895 chipset with Mali-G71 GPU. The Galaxy S8 and the Galaxy S8+ will be powered by a sealed Li-Po 3,000 mAh and a 3,500 mAh battery, respectively. Both support adaptive fast charging, QuickCharge 2.0, and wireless charging.

Software-wise, the Galaxy S8 runs Android Nougat out of the box. It features Samsung Pay, Samsung Pass, Samsung Connect, Samsung Health, and Samsung DeX support through a proprietary dock. Digital assistant Bixby will also be making a debut on the Galaxy S8, replacing the S-Voice. It will also have its own dedicated physical button. Samsung's latest UI features on-screen buttons, in lieu of the capacitive keys. These on-screen buttons have a new haptic feedback engine, similar to the iPhone's 3D Touch.

The Galaxy S8 is also host to a smorgasbord of sensors: iris scanner with facial recognition, fingerprint scanner, accelerometer, gyro, proximity sensor, compass, barometer, heart rate sensor, and SpO2. Like its predecessor, the Galaxy S8 is still IP68-rated, meaning it is dust and water resistant. Pricing starts at $750 for the Galaxy S8 and $850 for the Galaxy S8+. They will be bundled with a pair of AKG-branded earphones. Initially available in five color options: Midnight Black, Orchid Gray, Arctic Silver, Coral Blue, and Maple Gold, both devices will go on sale in late April 2017.
