Sony Debuts Xperia Z and Xperia ZL

Sony has finally been able to keep up with the competition with its newest line of Xperia smartphones, the Xperia Z and the Xperia ZL. For the longest time, Sony has been struggling putting a dent on the sales of Samsung Galaxy smartphones and Apple's very own iPhone. This was not surprising at all, considering the "at par" specifications of its flagship models, which had to be refreshed a couple of times. Finally, Sony has come up with new Xperia smartphones that are a notch ahead of the competition. First, let's meet the Xperia Z.

Rising from the ashes of previous Xperia flagships, Xperia Z is the first smartphone from Sony with a 5-inch 1080p Full HD display and a whopping 440 pixels per inch density. Add Sony Mobile Bravia Engine 2 and its proprietary UI, we definitely have a winner here. And with a 7.9 mm waistline, it's one of thinnest Sony smartphones ever.

The Xperia Z is armed with a quad-core 1.5 GHz Krait processor and Adreno 320 GPU. All this processing power would surely translate into one very capable device. It comes out of the box with Android 4.1.2 Jelly Bean with a planned upgrade to Android 4.2 in the near future. It supports GPS, Wi-Fi, Bluetooth, NFC and is LTE ready. It also has a stereo FM radio, compass, gyro sensor, accelerometer, and proximity sensor.

One of it's biggest USPs is its sweet 13-MP camera that is also capable of shooting videos up to 1080p FullHD. It supports image and video stabilization, HDR, sweep panorama, and continuous autofocus. It also comes with an LED flash. The question now is how good its image quality is given its very powerful camera module.

But the thing that separates Xperia Z from the competition is that it's IP57 certified - meaning it's dust and water resistant and water proof up to 1 meter for 30 minutes. The screen of the phone is also protected by a shatter-resistant and scratch-resistant glass. This is what a flagship smartphone should be these days. Kudos to Sony!

Xperia Z will come in three colors: Black, White, and Purple. It has a 2,330 mAh Li-Ion battery, micro-SD slot of up to 32GB, 16GB internal memory, and 2GB RAM. Needless to say, this phone will not come cheap as this is a flagship smartphone.

Xperia ZL, on the other hand, shares most of the specifications of Xperia Z, minus the IP57 certification. It might be a regional version of the Xperia Z. Also, it looks like the old Samsung Galaxy Note to me.

So there you have it! The two new babies of Sony! Sony has indeed come a long way when it comes to smartphones. I hope that it will be Sony's year this year.

Til then...
