An Overview: Windows Phone 8.1 Update
Starting this summer, all Nokia Lumia devices running Windows
Phone 8 will receive an over-the-air Windows Phone 8.1 software update. This update brings several changes to the current Windows Phone 8 OS, such as Action Center, Word Flow, Cortana, SensorCore, among others.
The Action Center is basically Windows Phone 8.1's version of notification center.
If you’ve missed a phone call, been mentioned in a Tweet, or received
an SMS, you’ll now find all of these things in the
Action Center. The Action Center also contains four quick
settings (which are customizable) to easily switch
on or off Flight Mode or Wi-Fi even when your phone is locked.

Then there's Word Flow, which is an intuitive smartphone keyboard. With it, you can now glide your
finger over the screen, instead of typing, and let your Nokia Lumia accurately predict what
you’re going to type. The more you use Word Flow, the more it learns from you, predicting
your most frequent expressions. It supports up to 16 languages.

Meanwhile, the Start screen can now be personalized more with the inclusion of an extra column of Live Tiles and the ability to display pictures in the background. Imaging has also been improved. A renewed Camera Roll gives you faster access to your images, image-editing tools and sharing options, right from Nokia Camera. Smart Shots, Cinemagraphs, and Refocus photos now come alive directly in the Camera Roll. There are also five new filters that can be found in the Creative Studio. Moreover, Nokia Storyteller has become a lot more social, thanks to the
new video slideshow feature that can be shared via Facebook or Twitter.

Siri and Google Now face new competition with Cortana. It is Nokia Lumia's personal, pro-active assistant,
capable of answering questions you ask yourself
everyday. Cortana detects and monitors the stuff you care about, looks out for you
throughout the day, and helps filter out the noise so you can focus on
what matters to you. Cortana will be rolled out in stages starting in the US and later to other regions.

Nokia has also joined the bandwagon of fitness-centric devices and applications with SensorCore. With it, your Lumia smartphone will be able to find out how many steps you take, how
fast you run, and where you mostly spend your time. Then there's some stuff exclusive to the Lumia 930, Lumia 1520, and Lumia Icon. With Windows Phone 8.1, the Lumia 930,
Lumia 1520 and Lumia Icon are capable of capturing better sound,
thanks to Dolby Surround Sound support. All three flagship devices will also be
able to project content wirelessly to Miracast-enabled screens, TVs, and
projectors.

All these features will come to your Lumia smartphone running on Windows
Phone 8 in an update package called Lumia Cyan summer of 2014.
