The Tizen-Powered Samsung Gear S Smartwatch

Samsung officially announced the Gear S smartwatch, which makes it the sixth smartwatch to carry the Gear branding. Like its predecessors, the Gear S is Tizen-based, instead of Android Wear or just Android. It is arguably the best looking Gear smartwatch to date. What makes it different from the bunch is its 3G connectivity. It features a 2-inch curved Super AMOLED display with a resolution of 480 x 360 pixels. The device is powered by a 1GHz dual-core CPU, coupled with 512MB RAM and 4GB of internal storage. it also has full connectivity options, which include quad-band 2G/3G, Bluetooth 4.1, Wi-Fi a/b/g/n, GPS/GLONASS, and USB 2.0.

The Gear S smartwatch will also be able to make and receive phone calls through an optional Bluetooth-powered neck accessory called the Samsung Gear Circle. Like its predecessor, the Gear S features a built-in accelerometer, gyroscope, compass, heart rate monitor, ambient light and UV sensors, and a barometer. The smartwatch is IP67 certified for water and dust resistance. It is powered by a 300mAh battery, which is quoted to provide 2 days of typical usage.
