HTC Desire EYE: Ultimate Selfie Smartphone

HTC has released its ultimate selfie smartphone, the Desire EYE. Not only does this smartphone have flagship specs, it also has one of the largest front-facing camera sensors available in the market today, Equipped with a 13-MP selfie camera, the Desire EYE easily trumps other selfie-centric smartphones with 5-MP to 8-MP front-facing shooters like the Sony Xperia C3, Samsung Galaxy Grand Prime, and Nokia Lumia 730.

The Desire EYE measures 151.7 mm x 73.8 mm x 8.5 mm and weighs 154 grams, which makes it larger than most devices packing a similar screen size. It packs a 5.2-inch IPS LCD of 1080p FullHD resolution with a pixel density of 423 ppi. It has a two-color, unibody casing made of plastic, which is a far cry from the aluminum unibody of the HTC One (M8) flagship. Along with the 13-MP selfie camera, the front-facing BoomSound speakers can also be found in front of the device. There is also a trio of noise-canceling microphones with the HTC Sense Voice technology. And like the Samsung Galaxy S5 and the Sony Xperia Z series, the Desire EYE is also IPX7-certified, meaning that it can withstand up to 1 meter of water for 30 minutes.

Like the HTC One (M8), the Desire EYE packs a quad-core Qualcomm Snapdragon 801 SoC with 2GB RAM and 16GB of on-board storage, This is expandable for up to 128GB via a microSD card. Software-wise, it comes with Android 4.4.2 KitKat out of the box with HTC's Sense 6 UI on top. One concern with the Desire EYE is its 2,400 mAh Li-Po battery, which is much smaller than that on the HTC One (M8) and competing Android devices. This is considering that this smartphone is also LTE capable.

What makes the HTC Desire EYE unique is the addition of a 13-MP front-facing camera with dual LED flash. It has a wide 22mm lens with an f/2,2 aperture. It has auto-focus, HDR mode, and is able to record 1080p videos. HTC has also equipped the Desire EYE with a smorgasbord of camera-oriented software features like HTC EYE Experience with Face Tracking, Screen Share, Split Capture, Face Fusion, Live Makeup, Auto Selfie, Voice Selfie, Photo Booth, and Crop Me In. The rear camera of the Desire EYE is very capable too, packing the same 13-MP sensor with a narrower 28mm lens but with a larger f/2,0 aperture. It is wide-angle and backside-illuminated. The Desire EYE is expected to cost as much as an HTC One M8 (2014). So, what do you think about this selfie smartphone?
