Budget Smartphone Xiaomi Redmi 2 Goes Official

Xiaomi has finally unveiled the successor to its best-selling Redmi 1S/Hongmi smartphone. Meet the much awaited budget smartphone from China - the Xiaomi Redmi 2. First off, it is not very different from its predecessor as the Redmi 2 still has the same 4.7-inch 720p HD IPS display found on the Redmi 1S. It has a pixel density of 312 ppi and now comes with color temperature adjustment options. It must be noted though that the Redmi 2 is more compact than the Redmi 1S.

One major change can be found under the hood, which is its 64-bit 1.2GHz Snapdragon 410 chipset with Adreno 306 GPU. There is still 1GB RAM along with 8GB of internal storage, expandable via microSD card. Its primary camera is still an 8-MP unit from OmniVision with a 28mm wide-angle lens with f/2.2 aperture, capable of shooting videos up to 1080p Full HD. Its selfie camera has been bumped up to 2-MP and can capture videos up to 720p HD. A 2,200mAh battery powers the smartphone and it runs Android 4.4.4 KitKat out-of-the-box with Xiaomi's own MIUI 6 on top.

Another major change in the Redmi 2 is the addition of LTE connectivity. The Xiaomi smartphone now supports GSM, WCDMA, TD LTE, and LTE FDD pipelines. Its other connectivity features include Wi-Fi b/g/n, Bluetooth 4.0, A-GPS + GLONASS + Beidou positioning, and microUSB 2.0 with support for QuickCharge 1.0. The smartphone will be available in white, black, green, yellow, and pink color variants. It can now be pre-ordered for $110 and will launch on January 9. There's no word yet if it will soon be available in other markets.
