Samsung Galaxy Note7 w/ Iris Scanner

At last, the much awaited Samsung Galaxy Note7 has arrived. In case you are wondering why Samsung skipped the Note6 moniker, it's because it doesn't want the latest from the Note Series to look like it's a generation behind the latest Galaxy S lineup, which includes the S7 and the S7 Edge. The Galaxy Note7 is a large smartphone - it's actually a phablet, a category of smartphones which the original Galaxy Note invented. It measures 153.5 mm x 73.9 mm x 7.9 mm and weighs 169 grams. This makes the Galaxy Note7 very compact when compared to its competitors like the iPhone 6S Plus. In addition, the Galaxy Note7 is IP68-certified, making it water and dust resistant.

The Samsung Galaxy Note7 packs a 5.7-inch dual-edge Super AMOLED display of Quad HD resolution. This is similar to the display on the Galaxy S7 Edge. It is also the first smartphone to feature Gorilla Glass 5. Like the Galaxy S7 and S7 Edge, the Galaxy Note7 features an updated Always-On Display to display notifications and app controls even when the screen is off. In terms of processing power, the US market-bound Galaxy Note7 comes with the 64-bit quad-core Qualcomm Snapdragon 820 chipset, with Adreno 530 GPU, Vulkan API, 4GB RAM, and 64GB of expandable UFS 2.0 internal storage. In other markets, which means the rest of the world, the Galaxy Note7 will be powered by the octa-core Exynos 8890 chip with Mali-T880 GPU instead. Regardless of the market, the Galaxy Note7 will run Android Marshmallow out of the box with the latest iteration of TouchWiz on top. The app icons now look more minimalist and the Edge UX from the Galaxy S7 Edge is now part of the package. With it, you can access various applications and do certain tasks with a horizontal swipe of the screen. A large 3,500 mAh non-removable battery will keep the phablet's lights on. It supports both fast charging and wireless fast charging.

When it to comes to photography, the Galaxy Note7 basically inherited the camera hardware of the Galaxy S7 and S7 Edge. It comes with a 12-MP primary camera with 1.4 micron pixels, an f/1.7 aperture lens, phase detection auto-focus, SMART OIS (optical image stabilization), and an LED flash. The main camera also features the Dual Pixel technology, which results in a faster and more accurate focusing even in low light. It's also able to take 4K UHD videos and has features such as Motion Panorama, Motion Photo, and Hyperlapse. As for the front camera, it's a 5-MP unit with an f/1.7 aperture and has features such as beauty mode, screen flash, and wide selfie. While the camera hardware remained the same, the software had some tweaks. For instance, the camera interface is now more swipe-driven. In terms of connectivity, the Galaxy Note7 has almost everything covered. It is the first Samsung device to come with a USB Type-C port. It has Bluetooth, Wi-Fi, GPS, NFC, LTE-A, and hybrid dual-SIM support. It also supports the open HDR10 standard, which produces higher dynamic range, better contrast, and richer colors when watching shows on NetFlix or Amazon. Sadly, the IR blaster is nowhere to be seen.

One of the most interesting features of the Samsung Galaxy Note7 is the addition and implementation on an iris scanner, which has been added as another layer of security. The Galaxy Note7 already has a fingerprint scanner embedded in the home button. It also supports more conventional authentication methods like a PIN or a pattern. Samsung's iris scanner is incorporated in the front-facing camera and uses infrared illumination. Samsung claims that it is fast enough and smart enough to authenticate through most types of eyeglasses. Through the iris scanner, you can also lock files and applications. Another interesting feature of the Galaxy Note7 is the revamped S-Pen. It is now water resistant and can even be used under water. There's also better pressure sensitivity and a faster response time. The Air Command suite of options now features Magnify and Translate. The former can be cranked up to 300% the magnification when hovering over the interface, while the latter translates text in various languages on the fly.  All of the S-Pen's previous functionality are still available.

Available in four colors, which include Black Onyx, Silver Titanium, Gold Platinum, and the new Blue Coral finish, the Galaxy Note7 will retail for a whopping $800 or so. It is already available for pre-order worldwide. Depending on the country, Samsung is bundling the Galaxy Note7 with a free Gear VR headset, a 256GB microSD card, or a Gear Fit 2 smartband. Are you getting one?
