Flagship: HTC U11 Features Edge Sense

Almost all major Android handset manufacturers have launched their flagships for 2017 - except for HTC. That day has come. Meet the HTC U11. Covered in glass panels seamlessly attached to a metal frame, the U11 measures 153.9 mm x 75.9 mm x 7.9 mm and weighs 169 grams, which is quite hefty. It packs a 5.5-inch Super LCD 5 of Quad HD resolution, protected by Gorilla Glass 5. It has the same screen-to-body ratio similar to that of the HTC 10, which is not necessarily impressive. It also has a more traditional 16:9 screen aspect ratio. The HTC U11, however, is IP67-certified, making it somehow water and dust resistant. Also, a fingerprint scanner is embedded in the home button.

Under the hood is the latest octa-core Qualcomm Snapdragon 835 chipset with 4GB RAM and 64GB of expandable storage. In some Asian markets, it will come with 6GB RAM and 128GB of expandable storage. It runs Android 7.0 Nougat with the latest Sense UI on top but comes with a less than stellar 3,000 mAh non-removable battery, at least on paper. The battery supports Quick Charge 3.0 and comes with two power saving modes. Its most standout feature is the Edge Sense, which lets you squeeze the sides of the phone in order to execute specific actions. There is also the Sense Companion, which will give suggestions depending on what you do and how you use your smartphone. Google Assistant and Amazon Alexa could also be part of the package depending on where you live.

When it comes to photography, the HTC U11 sports a 12-MP UltraPixel primary camera with Dual Pixel technology, an f/1.7 aperture, 1.4 micron pixel size, optical image stabilization (OIS), dual-LED flash, and 4K video recording capability, including 3D audio and slow motion video in 1080p Full HD at 120 frames per second. The setup is similar to those of the Galaxy S7 and S8 family. The U11's front-facing camera comes in at 16-MP with an f/1.7 aperture and selfie panorama mode. Like all HTC flagships, the U11 comes with BoomSound Hi-Fi Edition, making the device Hi-Res Audio certified. It also has four microphones. Connectivity-wise, the HTC U11 supports USB Type-C, Bluetooth 4.2, Wi-Fi, NFC, GPS with GLONASS and Beidou, dual-SIM support (in some regions), and LTE. Sadly, the 3.5 mm headset jack is gone.

The HTC U11 will be available in Amazing Silver, Sapphire Blue, Brilliant Black, Ice White, and Solar Red color variants. They will go on sale on May 2017, which is expected to cost about €749/£649/$649. Expect the U11 to be shipped in early June 2017.
