Movie Review: Gravity

Directed by Oscar nominee Alfonso CuarĂ³n and topbilled by Academy Award-winning actors Sandra Bullock and George Clooney, Gravity is a must-see film for sci-fi lovers. It is a story of a medical engineer and an astronaut working together to survive after an accident leaves them adrift in space. While the film Elysium made it seemingly possible to live outside our planet, Gravity does just the opposite. In fact, the film claims that life in space is impossible. And it could be true.

The story goes like this: Bio-medical engineer Dr. Ryan Stone is on her first space shuttle mission, accompanied by veteran astronaut Matt Kowalski, who is commanding his final expedition. During a spacewalk, debris from a satellite crashes into the space shuttle Explorer, destroying most of it and leaving them stranded in space with limited air. The debris continues to hit other satellites, causing a chain reaction of destruction. With limited oxygen, no communication line, and imminent threat from space debris, will both of them make it?

Gravity is of drama, thriller, sci-fi genre, which runs for approximately 90 minutes. It's rated PG-13 in most countries for disturbing images, perilous sequences, and strong language. Generally, the film takes you on a ride to outer space. The scenes are visually stunning especially the panoramic views of the earth and the blinding rays of the sun. It is also very engaging, overwhelming, and heart-thumping, mainly because there's a lot of movement happening. The visual effects used were incredible - from floating tears to burning objects to exploding space stations. It is basically the film that brings you closest to space and makes you NOT want to go there even in your dreams. As for the cast, I think that casting Sandra Bullock was a good idea, as she is someone relatable and has a physique suited for such rugged environments. She did a good job portraying scenes of weightlessness as well. While some scenes may not be plausible in real life, I still enjoyed the journey and challenges that the characters went through. Gravity is not a film for the faint of heart, and definitely not for everybody, as it may bore them. But to the rest, I suggest to see it for yourself. The film is available in 2D, 2D Atmos, 3D, and IMAX 3D.
