Movie Review: Maleficent

Maleficent is a 2014 dark fantasy adventure film starring Angelina Jolie as the eponymous Disney villainess character. The film is a live-action re-imagining of Walt Disney's 1959 animated film Sleeping Beauty, and portrays the story from the perspective of the antagonist, Maleficent.

The story goes like this: A beautiful, pure-hearted young woman, Maleficent has an idyllic life growing up in a peaceable forest kingdom, until one day when an invading army threatens the harmony of the land. Maleficent rises to be the land's fiercest protector, but she ultimately suffers a ruthless betrayal - an act that begins to turn her pure heart to stone. Bent on revenge, Maleficent faces a battle with the invading king's successor and, as a result, places a curse upon his newborn infant Aurora. As the child grows, Maleficent realizes that Aurora holds the key to peace in the kingdom - and perhaps to Maleficent's true happiness as well.

Maleficent is of fantasy, action, adventure, and romance genre, which runs for approximately 97 minutes. It's rated G or PG in most countries for sequences of fantasy action and violence, including frightening images. Perhaps, Maleficent is one of the most over-hyped films to date, considering it's been heavily advertised since last year. While the use of 3D special effects is surreal and mind-blowing, there seems to be a lot lacking in the plot. The film seemed monotonous, dragging, and dry. If there's any consolation, it would be Angelina Jolie's portrayal of Maleficent. She's the only character in the film that managed to show emotion, which convinced me to finish watching the movie. Even Elle Fanning's Aurora, while pretty and sweet, is so forgettable. Also, the supposed twist at the end of the movie was not unexpected at all. I would wish the writers really took more time in developing the plot of this otherwise magnificent film. Jolie's efforts and the incredible use of 3D special effects were put to waste by an uninspiring storyline. The film is available in 2D, Digital 3D, RealD 3D, IMAX 3D, Dolby Atmos, and 4DX.

RATING: 3.5 out of 5 STARS
