Is the LG G3 a Galaxy S5 Killer?

LG is probably the last of the big players to announce its flagship smartphone this year. And with the LG G3, the company sure did deliver. With the G3's top notch specs, it should easily outdo the Galaxy S5 in sales. But can it really do it? After all, it has arrived late in the market, consumers could have already bought a Galaxy S5, an HTC One (M8), or a Sony Xperia Z2. Would LG just be grabbing market share from potential iPhone 6 buyers? Let's find out.

The LG G3 is the first smartphone (outside of China) to sport a Quad HD (2560 x 1440) display. All its competitors are stuck with 1080p FullHD displays. While QHD would surely make the display more crisp, the difference between it and FullHD is negligible, considering you won't really be able to distinguish individual pixels on both. Moreover, a higher resolution display would theoretically take more toll on the battery life. But then again, the QHD display of the LG G3 would make the smartphone future-proof.

Aside from the QHD display, the LG G3 comes in a very compact body with near zero bezels. This one is a feat, considering it has a 5.5-inch screen yet it is just as big as the Xperia Z2, which has just 5.2 inches screen. Moreover, it's metal-like finish and curvature gives the G3 a more premium look. And like its predecessor, the G2, all physical buttons are positioned at the back, which may or may not be to your liking.

When it comes to the interface, the LG G3 has seen an improvement from its predecessor. The Optimus UI now has round and flat icons, which is pretty much the trend these days. LG has also introduced new features, such as Smart Notice, which would remind you about missed calls that you have not returned. There is also the Smart Keyboard, which comes with rich customization options - you can resize it and it learns faster from your typing. Plus the Smart Security feature, which includes the improved Knock Code and Content Lock that hides your private files from prying eyes. When looking at the competition, Samsung, Sony, and HTC all have their proprietary launchers and smart features, which may be useful or just plain gimmicky.

The imaging department is also another area that LG focused on while developing the G3. LG has reintroduced the laser auto-focus, which is a cool sounding name for an IR laser beam that helps the G3 achieve the fastest auto-focus of any smartphone so far. Its 13-MP main camera is also equipped with optical image stabilization plus (OIS+) tech. While the Galaxy S5 has 16-MP, the Xperia Z2 has 20-MP, and the HTC One M8 has 4-UltraPixels, all do not have OIS.

As far as accessories are concerned, LG has introduced the QuickCircle case, which is a flip cover that has a round cut-out in front for quick-peek operation of the phone plus some more accessories like a wireless charging cover, among others. The LG G3 is already available in Korea and will be available worldwide in late June.

So is LG G3 the best smartphone to date? Hardly. Being the best is very subjective and varies by individual. It is safer to say that the G3 is the best smartphone that LG has come up with. Is it a Galaxy S5 killer? Highly unlikely. The Galaxy S5 has been announced first and is already selling in tens of millions, which the G3 needs to catch up to. The Galaxy S5 is also dust proof, water resistant, and features novelties such as a fingerprint sensor and a heart rate sensor, which the G3 does not have/feature. So, is the G3 the best Android smartphone? Could be but Samsung, Sony, and HTC would beg to disagree. The Sony Xperia Z2 has a quality 20-MP camera and is also water resistant. The HTC One M8 has probably the most premium design of any major Android smartphone. Regardless of one's allegiance, it cannot be denied that the LG G3 is a superb smartphone that will surely give its competitors a run for their money.
