Sony Xperia XZ Premium, XZs, XA1, & XA1 Ultra

It's now Sony's time to take the MWC 2017 stage and the company brought with it four Xperia smartphones: Xperia XZ Premium, Xperia XZs, Xperia XA1, and Xperia XA1 Ultra. All four smartphones have tricks up their sleeves especially when it comes to camera. The Sony Xperia XZ Premium is the most high-end of the four. It comes with a 5.5-inch IPS Triluminos display of 4K resolution with support for HDR imagery. It boasts a Glass Loop Surface (using Gorilla Glass 5) that wraps around the entire phone, which is also IP68 certified (dust and water resistant). Ticking inside is an octa-core Qualcomm Snapdragon 835 chipset with Adreno 540 GPU, 4GB RAM, and 64GB of expandable storage. It runs Android 7 Nougat out of the box with the latest Xperia UI on top.

Camera-wise, the Xperia XZ Premium is equipped with a 19-MP main camera with phase detection and laser auto-focus, OIS (optical image stabilization), 4K video recording support, and an LED flash. Its best feature is the 960 fps slow motion video capture with anti-distortion shutter. The resulting video is captured at 720p HD. It also has a 13-MP secondary camera with an f/2.0 aperture. Connectivity features include LTE, dual-SIM support, Bluetooth 4.2, GPS, NFC, a 3.5 mm jack, stereo speakers, and a USB Type-C port. It also has a fingerprint scanner embedded in the power button though its availability is region dependent. A 3,230 mAh battery, with QuickCharge 3.0 support and Qnovo technology, will keep its lights on. The Xperia XZ Premium will come in Luminous Chrome and Deep Sea Black color variants.

Meanwhile, the Sony Xperia XZs is nothing but an Xperia XZ with Motion Eye camera. It packs a 5.2-inch IPS Triluminos display of 1080p Full HD resolution. Like the Xperia XZ Premium, the Xperia XZs is IP68 certified (dust and water resistant). Under the hood is a quad-core Qualcomm Snapdragon 820 chipset with Adreno 530 GPU, 4GB RAM, and 32GB of expandable storage. It runs Android 7 Nougat out of the box with the latest Xperia UI on top.

The Xperia XZs shares the same camera lens and setup with the Xperia XZ Premium but the former has predictive and laser auto-focus, an RGBC-IR sensor for natural color rendering, and SteadyShot 5-axis digital stabilization. Connectivity features include LTE, dual-SIM support, Bluetooth 4.2, GPS, NFC, a 3.5 mm jack, stereo speakers, and a USB Type-C port. It also has a fingerprint scanner embedded in the power button though its availability is region dependent. A 2,900 mAh battery, with QuickCharge 3.0 support, will keep its lights on. The Xperia XZs will come in Warm Silver, Ice Blue, and Black color variants and will become available in April 2017 for $699.

Then we have the midrange smartphone, Sony Xperia XA1, which features a 5-inch "borderless edge-to-edge" display. It is powered by an octa-core MediaTek Helio P20 chipset with 3GB RAM and 32GB of expandable storage. It runs Android Nougat out of the box. Imaging-wise, it has a 23-MP Exmor RS primary camera with an f/2.0 aperture, hybrid auto-focus, the SteadyShot feature, 1080p Full HD video recording support, and an LED flash. It also has an 8-MP Exmor R secondary shooter with auto-focus and the SteadyShot feature. It also happens to have a measly 2,300 mAh battery. Unlike the new premium Xperia smartphones, the Xperia XA1 still uses the old microUSB port. It will come in four colors: white, black, gold, and pink. It will go on sale April 2017 for $300.

Sony has also unveiled the Xperia XA1 Ultra, which is a full-blown tablet, sporting a 6-inch display of 1080p Full HD resolution. Under the hood is an octa-core MediaTek Helio P20 chipset with 4GB RAM and 64GB of expandable storage. It runs Android Nougat out of the box. Imaging-wise, it has the same primary camera setup with the Xperia XA1 but has a 16-MP secondary camera with an f/2.0 aperture, auto-focus, OIS (optical image stabilization) and an LED flash. The battery capacity is tremendously low rated at 2,700 mAh. It uses USB Type-C for charging and has fast charge support. The Xperia XA1 Ultra will ship in four colors: white, black, gold, and pink. There's no word yet regarding its price.

So which new Xperia smartphone are you itching to buy?

Til then...
