HTC U11+ & U11 Life: Edge Sense Buddies

As 2017 ends, HTC is not done yet churning quality smartphones. And with the arrival of the U11+, HTC may have launched its best smartphone to date. Almost the same size as its predecessor the HTC U11+ came with all the bells and whistles that the U11 arrived with - squeezable sides (Edge Sense) and sleek body. But this time around, the U11+ comes with a larger battery, a unique translucent design, a higher ingress protection rating (IP68 dust and water resistance), and a larger screen sporting the increasingly popular 18:9 screen aspect ratio.

The HTC U11+ packs a 6-inch Super LCD6 screen with DCI-P3 and HDR10 support, protected by Gorilla Glass 5. Ticking inside is an octa-core Qualcomm Snapdragon 835 SoC with 4GB/6GB RAM and 64GB/128GB of expandable storage. Its battery capacity does not disappoint either at 3,930 mAh, which supports Qualcomm QuickCharge 3.0. It runs Android 8.0 Oreo out of the box with HTC Sense on top. Other features include BoomSound speakers that are 30% louder. Unfortunately, there is still no 3.5 mm headphone jack here. Good thing is that HTC bundled it with active noise-cancelling earphones. The HTC U11+ also has a rear-mounted fingerprint scanner.

htc u11+
Imaging-wise, the U11+ sports a single 12-MP primary camera with an f/1.7 aperture, optical image stabilization (OIS), 1.4 micron pixels, phase detection auto-focus, and dual-tone dual-LED flash. There's also an 8-MP front-facing camera with HDR tricks on board. The U11+ will come in three colors: Ceramic Black, Amazing Silver, and Translucent Black. It will retail for £699 in the UK and 799 Euros across Europe. Sadly, it won't officially reach the US shores.

htc u11+

Then we have the HTC U11 Life, which looks more similar to the original U11. It has a 5.2-inch Super LCD screen of 1080p Full HD resolution. It is powered by an octa-core Qualcomm Snapdragon 630 chipset with 3GB/4GB RAM and 32GB/64GB of expandable storage. It will run Android 7.1 Nougat out of the box with the latest HTC Sense on top in the US (with a promised Android 8.0 Oreo update within 30 days). On the other hand, the U11 Life will ship with Android 8.0 Oreo (Android One) in Europe. When it comes to shooting lenses, the U11 Life sports a 16-MP primary camera with an f/2.0 aperture, phase detection auto-focus, and an LED flash. Another 16-MP shooter can be found in front on the device. Its other features include Edge Sense, IP67 rating for dust and water resistance, and a front-mounted fingerprint scanner. HTC has also bundled USonic headphones with the U11 Life, which sadly lacks a 3.5 mm headphone jack. Retailing for $349, the U11 Life will come in Brilliant Black, Sapphire Blue, and Ice White color variants.

Flagship: HTC U11 Features Edge Sense

Almost all major Android handset manufacturers have launched their flagships for 2017 - except for HTC. That day has come. Meet the HTC U11. Covered in glass panels seamlessly attached to a metal frame, the U11 measures 153.9 mm x 75.9 mm x 7.9 mm and weighs 169 grams, which is quite hefty. It packs a 5.5-inch Super LCD 5 of Quad HD resolution, protected by Gorilla Glass 5. It has the same screen-to-body ratio similar to that of the HTC 10, which is not necessarily impressive. It also has a more traditional 16:9 screen aspect ratio. The HTC U11, however, is IP67-certified, making it somehow water and dust resistant. Also, a fingerprint scanner is embedded in the home button.

htc u11
Under the hood is the latest octa-core Qualcomm Snapdragon 835 chipset with 4GB RAM and 64GB of expandable storage. In some Asian markets, it will come with 6GB RAM and 128GB of expandable storage. It runs Android 7.0 Nougat with the latest Sense UI on top but comes with a less than stellar 3,000 mAh non-removable battery, at least on paper. The battery supports Quick Charge 3.0 and comes with two power saving modes. Its most standout feature is the Edge Sense, which lets you squeeze the sides of the phone in order to execute specific actions. There is also the Sense Companion, which will give suggestions depending on what you do and how you use your smartphone. Google Assistant and Amazon Alexa could also be part of the package depending on where you live.

htc u11
When it comes to photography, the HTC U11 sports a 12-MP UltraPixel primary camera with Dual Pixel technology, an f/1.7 aperture, 1.4 micron pixel size, optical image stabilization (OIS), dual-LED flash, and 4K video recording capability, including 3D audio and slow motion video in 1080p Full HD at 120 frames per second. The setup is similar to those of the Galaxy S7 and S8 family. The U11's front-facing camera comes in at 16-MP with an f/1.7 aperture and selfie panorama mode. Like all HTC flagships, the U11 comes with BoomSound Hi-Fi Edition, making the device Hi-Res Audio certified. It also has four microphones. Connectivity-wise, the HTC U11 supports USB Type-C, Bluetooth 4.2, Wi-Fi, NFC, GPS with GLONASS and Beidou, dual-SIM support (in some regions), and LTE. Sadly, the 3.5 mm headset jack is gone.

htc u11

The HTC U11 will be available in Amazing Silver, Sapphire Blue, Brilliant Black, Ice White, and Solar Red color variants. They will go on sale on May 2017, which is expected to cost about €749/£649/$649. Expect the U11 to be shipped in early June 2017.

HTC Launches U Ultra & U Play

In Taiwan, HTC announced two new smartphones - the interesting metal-clad U Ultra and the U Play. The HTC U Ultra packs a secondary 2-inch display on top of its main 5.7-inch Super LCD 5 of Quad HD resolution. The second screen will be able to display relevant notifications and alerts, along with app shortcuts and weather information, with the help of artificial intelligence (HTC Sense Companion). The display is protected by either Gorilla Glas 5 or a sapphire glass. Ticking inside the U Ultra is a quad-core Qualcomm Snapdragon 821 chipset with 4GB RAM and 64GB/128GB of expandable internal storage (up to 2TB). It runs Android 7.0 Nougat out of the box with the latest HTC Sense UI on top.

htc u ultra
Photography-wise, the HTC U Ultra sports a 12-MP UltraPixel main camera with an f/1.8 aperture, phase detection auto-focus, laser auto-focus, and optical image stabilization (OIS) plus a 16-MP wide-angle selfie camera. Keeping up with the recent trend in smartphones, the U Ultra comes with a USB Type-C port and has abandoned the 3.5 mm headphone jack. It also has 4 microphones for hi-res audio and 3D audio capture. A fingerprint scanner is embedded in the home button. A rather small 3,000 mAh battery will keep its lights on. The U Ultra features a highly reflective glass back with vivid colors. It will come in blue, pink, white, and black variants. Priced at $749, the U Ultra is now pre-selling and will ship end of January 2017 in Taiwan and March 2017 for the rest of the world.

Then there's the HTC U Play. It's basically a smaller version of the U Ultra sans the secondary display. The U Play comes with a 5.2-inch display of 1080p Full HD resolution. Under the hood is an octa-core MediaTek Helio P10 chipset with 3GB/4GB RAM and 32GB/64GB of expandable internal storage. Sadly, the U Play will ship only with Android Marshmallow, but will be updated to Nougat shortly. Camera-wise, HTC ditches the UltraPixel branding and slapped the U Ultra with a regular 16-MP camera with an f/2.0 aperture and an LED flash. Aside from a smaller 2,500 mAh battery, not much has been revealed about the HTC U Play. Information about pricing and availability could be out soon.

HTC Unveils the Desire 10 Pro & Desire 10 Lifestyle

Two new HTC midrange smartphones have been unveiled - the Desire 10 Pro and the Desire 10 Lifestyle. Both smartphones do away with onscreen buttons and navigation can be done through the bottom bezel. Between the two, the Desire 10 Pro is more capable as it comes with a 5.5-inch IPS display of 1080p Full HD resolution, covered by a layer of Gorilla Glass. Ticking inside is an octa-core MediaTek Helio P10 chipset with 4GB RAM and 64GB of expandable internal storage. It runs Android 6.0 Marshmallow out of the box with HTC Sense on top.

Then we have the HTC Desire 10 Lifestyle, which looks very much like the Desire 10 Pro. It has a 5.5-inch display of just 720p HD resolution. It also has a dated chipset - Qualcomm Snapdragon 400 with 2GB/3GB RAM and 16GB/32GB of expandable internal storage. It has a 13-MP primary camera with LED flash and a 5-MP front-facing snapper. Connectivity-wise, it's basically the same of those of the Desire 10 Pro but LTE is only Cat. 4. The Desire 10 Lifestyle also does not have a fingerprint scanner. Running Android 6.0 Marshmallow with HTC Sense on top, the lower midrange phablet is powered by a rather small 2,700 mAh battery. HTC One A9s: Cheaper But Downgraded

HTC took the wraps off what seems a successor to the One A9 smartphone. Called the HTC One A9s, one would expect it to be at least more powerful than its predecessor. However, HTC took a different route and made the One A9s a more affordable version of the metal-clad One A9. The HTC One A9s packs a 5-inch LCD of 720p HD resolution, protected by a Gorilla Glass. Ticking inside is an octa-core MediaTek Helio P10 processor with 2GB/3GB RAM and 16GB/32GB of expandable internal storage. A rather modest 2,300 mAh battery will keep its lights on. It runs Android 6.0 Marshmallow with the latest Sense UI on top. HTC plans to sell it for about $350, which is still quite pricey for the specs it offers.

HTC 10 Packs 2nd Gen 12-MP UltraPixel Camera

After countless leaks, the HTC 10 has gone official. It is the first time HTC drops the "One" and "M" monikers for its flagship smartphone. Despite the new naming convention, the HTC 10 is as premium as any top of the line smartphone can get. For starters, the HTC 10 is clad in aluminum with a curved Gorilla Glass front panel and a signature chamfered frame. It packs a 5.2-inch Super LCD 5 display of Quad HD resolution. That translates to a pixel density of 576 pixels per inch and a high screen-to-body ratio of 71.13%. While seemingly missing at first, the HTC 10 does come with two BoomSound speakers (woofer and tweeter) with Dolby Audio support and 3 noise-cancelling microphones.

htc 10
Like other flagship smartphones of 2016, the HTC 10 is powered by a 64-bit quad-core Qualcomm Snapdragon 820 chipset (at least for the US market) with 4GB RAM and 32GB/64GB of expandable internal storage. It runs Android 6.0 Marshmallow with HTC Sense 8 UI on top. Connectivity-wise, the HTC 10 supports Wi-Fi, Bluetooth, GPS, LTE-A, and USB Type-C. A fingerprint scanner is also embedded under the home button. A 3,000 mAh non-removable battery will keep its lights on and it can be charged up to 50% in 30 minutes, courtesy of Qualcomm Quick Charge 3.0.
htc 10
Here is where things get interesting. The HTC 10 sports a brand new 12-MP second generation UltraPixel rear camera with 1.55 micron pixels, a bright f/1.8 aperture, laser auto-focus, optical image stabilization (OIS), and dual-tone, dual-LED flash. The main camera also supports 12-bit RAW capture, 4K video recording, slow-motion video capture, auto-HDR, hi-res audio, a Pro camera mode, Zoe Capture (similar to Apple's Live Photos and Samsung's Motion Photo), hyper-lapse and time-lapse video recording, among others. Meanwhile, its 5-MP front-facing snapper has an ultra wide-angle lens with 1.34 micron pixels, an f/1.7 aperture, and OIS.

htc 10
So far, all these features make the HTC 10 a very capable and powerful smartphone but how does it stack up against the competition - mainly the Samsung Galaxy S7 and LG G5. Both the Galaxy S7 and the G5 have an Always-On Display, which may or may not be important to the user. The Galaxy S7, in particular, has an IP68 certification for water and dust resistance, a heart-rate monitor, supports wireless charging and Samsung Pay. On the other hand, the G5 has a removable battery, higher mega-pixel rear and front cameras, and LG Friends. The HTC 10 differentiates itself through its BoomSound speakers and front camera with OIS.

htc 10
The HTC 10 will come in four color options: Carbon Grey, Glacier Silver, Topaz Gold, and Camellia Red. The unlocked 32GB version will retail for $699 and will start shipping in early May 2016. Pre-orders have already started today. Are you getting one?

The HTC One E9+ goes official. It is successor to the One E8, which is basically a plastic-clad version of the One M8 smartphone. Interestingly, the One E9+ is not an exact replica of the One M9 that is just wrapped in glossy plastic. The former is actually better spec'd than the latter in some aspects. For instance, the HTC One E9+ comes with a 5.5-inch LCD of Quad HD resolution while the One M9's display maxes out at 1080p Full HD. Aside from the display and materials used, the One E9+ is powered by a MediaTek MT6795M chipset with a PowerVR G6200 GPU while th One M9 comes with a Qualcomm Snapdragon 810 chipset that is said to overheat with heavy use.

Also expected to launch with the One E9+ is the One E9, which has a lower but still great 1080p Full HD display, 2GB RAM, and a 16-MP primary camera.

HTC RE Vive: Virtual Reality Headset

HTC has joined the bandwagon and unveiled its first virtual reality headset called the RE Vive. This is HTC's take on the Samsung Gear VR and Google Cardboard. To come up with this VR headset, HTC has tied up with Taiwan-based maker Valve. The RE Vive headgear uses over 70 sensors and provides full, 360-degree room tracking. You can not only look around, but walk and experience the virtual plane, as well as interact "just like you do in the real world". The RE Vive offers a pretty nice 90 fps performance. The headgear comes with two separate VR controllers, functioning with a plethora of different "VR experiences".

HTC One M9 w/ 20-MP Camera & Snapdragon 810

After months of leaks, the much awaited sequel to the One M8 has arrived. Meet the HTC One M9, which comes with a premium dual-tone metal unibody design. It measures 144.6 mm x 69.7 mm x 9.61 mm, which is shorter and narrower than its predecessor but still bigger than other flagships with the same screen size. The only points that you can count against the One M9 is the non-removable battery cover, lack of optical image stabilization (OIS), and not opting for a Quad HD display. The latter is subject to discussion depending on one's needs and preferences.
